Hi. Does anyone have good recommend for inexpensive (1.e. $50 - $80 ish) headphones for flight to Amsterdam from NYC (too long at 7+1/2 hrs . . .arg) and for place to shop for them? Only other use for headphones is at gym and I use the $10 latch-onto-ear kind from Sony, so I'm not looking to invest in good headphones. And . . . I don't like buds as my ears are too small and they simply hurt. Thanks.

Thats not a long flighttime at all, I just came back from Panama....
Anyway, your best bet is in-ear headphones, much better isolation that those active kinds. Check out Ultimate-Ears, Denon, Sennheiser etc.

Sennheiser PX100 are cheap and very good and suit most people. I like the PX200 (closed version) even more but they have to suit your head or you get no bass at all - try them if you can because if they fit you right they're superb.
Both fold up into quite a small case.

+1 on the noise cancelling ear phones - it makes *such* a difference to the journey.

This is all very helpful. Thank you. I'll check these suggestions out. I'm delighted that all replies seem to be from either the UK or the Netherlands! BazC, you've helped me before on this site. Thanks. I'll try and get to a store where I can put the things on my head. Victor25, any amount of time on a plane is long for me, as most preferred travel is a walk or a bike. My hope is to endure with music/books. However, husband and self are really looking forward to the trip (though not the flight) so that alone should help!

I'm glad I'm not the only one who finds ear buds very painful! What's the deal, I wonder? Do we have smaller ear-holes than average? There must be more people like us.

Of course, for a flight you want something compact and not very expensive, but I don't care much for the earbuds either. This may be a case for the circumauricular, fold-up, hundred-dollar Sony phones. They're not my go-to for everyday use, but they have their place.
The around-the-ear design does help to block outside noise. They can fold up and fit in a small day pack, and they're about as obvious as can be to a TSA agent.

Well you'll need a pair with a boom microphone, else how will you talk to air traffic control...
