Hello pianoworld!

I've been asked by my schools chamber orchestra to pick a piece to play with them in our concert this fall. We're not many, about 3 violins, 3 viola and 2 cello, no wind or timpani or anything like that. So i was thinking of something smaller, maybe a 5-15 piece from whichever era. Can you help me find anything suitable for such a small orchestra?

David

Piano Concerti with string orchestra (like some Haydn or Mozart) might work, but you'd need about three more violins and a double bass so you have a full string orchestra (dividing the violins you have in two groups would probably upset the balance). If you can't get these, you could maybe do a piano quintet (there are many of them from all eras) if you don't mind that not everyone gets to play.

I have an ice cream. I cannot mail it, for it will melt.

Oh this is a piano concerto thread. I was thinking just a chamber piece.

Our chamber orchestra is bizarre

4 violins, 2 violas, 1 cello, and 2 basses (last year it was 3 basses! smile

If you get hold of Hinson's Music for Piano and Orchestra, there is a listing of pieces for piano and strings. The easiest music to get hold of would be by Bach, Haydn, and Mozart.
