I am trying to sell my piano but can't find any information about it. It is a console piano and is 30 years old. The outside plate name is Hastings but the interior is labled Currier with a serial number 53352. I don't know how to price or sell a piano without any information about it. I want to be fair in regards to selling it. It has not been played for over 10 years nor has it been tuned in quite some time. It does have a damp chaser but I don't really know anything about it and how it works. This was my piano as a child and it was in my parents home for 20 years before I got it. I don't see having a professional come look at it if I am just trying to get rid of it. Anyone that may have information about Currier Pianos or have suggestions on pricing, please let me know.

Shellgirl,

Currier piano company produced pianos in Ashville, NC up until 1981. They were owned by Kaman (Ovation Guitars) and closed down when they needed a good tax write-off. Unfortunately, we all lost our jobs at the same time, but that's life!

It never was a quality piano company! They also produced "stencil" pianos (pianos made by one company with a different name on the fallboard). They were best known for "Currier Coat", a finish on the piano that would sustain punishment, even to cigarette burns. But is was not a great musical instrument. Back 25 years ago, they would retail for about $1495 and was considered one of the least quality-oriented pianos available. But they were in a desirable price point, so (at least for a time) they succeeded. But their competition soon came from Japan and Korea and the end came quickly.

So, if you can get $600 to $700 for your piano, you should be very happy.

The history of Currier Pianomakers can be found in Larry Fine's "The Piano Book".
