I know just a few days back I asked for harmonic analysis for G minor Minuet. But I am really getting frustrated with G minor Polonaise (from Anna Magdalena Bach Little Book). First 4 measures are nice and easy with I & V chords in G minor. After than I am lost. Is it G minor or B flat major from measure 5? Is there a sudden key change measure to measure. I see a F7 & G7 chord too. Could someone please help me with the Harmonic Analysis of this piece. Thanks in Advance.

Regards,
VJ

I think you need to go back and look again. The first eight bars are all in G minor. The only accidentals are the F# and there are no natural Bs or Fs that I can see. Later on it becomes more harmonically interesting but I'm not sure we're looking at the same thing ...

Thanks for the reply, Andy. I realize I was not specific enough about the piece I was asking. I am attaching the Polonaise score here. Please help me out.

OK, that's clear but you are still seeing a G7 where there isn't one!

Measures 1-4 : G minor
Measures 5-10: Bb major
Measure 11: Transition - could be either G minor or Bb major
Measures 12-16 : G minor again

Obviously it moves through different chords in each of those measures but I don't see anywhere that moves out of one of those two keys. Anyone else?

Andy,

What I am going to ask you may sound elementary or even silly. I am just wondering if you could please tell me what is the function on note G in Bass of measure 7. Which chord does it belong to. That is where all the confusions started for me. Thanks for helping me out in this.

Thanks,
VJ

It's the notes of a Gm7 chord (G, Bb, D & F). Or since this section is definitely in Bb major, you might prefer to consider it Bb 6 with a G bass.

I'm not sure if you have a theory book that you can work through. I'm lucky - did all that when I was in school years ago (and, surprisingly enough, one of the few things I can still remember!).

Amazing. Thanks. I have just started with Piston's Harmony. Could you please recommend a good theory book. Thanks again for the explanation.
