I'm considering purchasing a Kawai K3 and have found that the only ones available here in Australia come from Indonesia. Can anyone confirm whether the pianos are manufactured or just assembled in Indonesia? Has anyone experienced a difference in quality of workmanship between the Japanese and Indonesian pianos?

We have been extremely pleased in the quality of the Kawai pianos from Indonesia.

I remember the first GM10K grand we got in. The previous GM10 was made in Japan and this was the first one we got in. I scheduled one of the tuners to be on hand when we unboxed it that morning. I did this based on our experience we had when we were a Yamaha dealer with the Yamaha GA1E 4'11" grands, which they were making in Indonesia before Kawai built their factory there. Our experience with the GA1E was that they all really needed a tuning out of the box, as well as extensive voicing to mellow them down.

So the tuner was tuning another piano on the floor while we unboxed the GM10K. When the piano was set up he came over to try it out. He shook his head and said, "That's amazing, it's dead on A440 and in tune — you have another one you want me to tune instead?" Our finisher worked his way around the piano to look at the finish and commented that there was nothing for him to do on the piano - it was ready to be delivered if it were sold.

One thing to keep in mind is that Kawai is adjusting to the market so they have models that are competitive with a changing market, ie the Chinese made pianos.

I find it interesting that most Apple products - iPods, iPhone, etc. that I've bought lately say, "Engineered by Apple in California, assembled in China."

So to answer your question I personally would have no qualm at all in personally buying a K3 or any other piano Kawai makes. We seen here first hand that the quality level is the same as the Japanese models.

I mentioned in another thread that I recently purchased a new Kawai GM-10K (made in the Kawai Indonesian factory). I am very happy with it. I seem to recall Larry Fine's 2008 supplement commented on the good qc now in place for the Kawai and Yamaha Indonesian facilities. The RPT that prepped my piano had very little to do to prepare it.

We had our first tuning on our Indonesion GM-10K, very little to adjust. We have been very happy with it.

Aloha!
