We have successfully migrated our web site to our new 8 CPU / 8GB Ram Sun Microsystem Server.

The move happened between 9:00 a.m. (EST) and 9:20 a.m. today (08/13/08)

Like any major move, there may be unforseen glitches.

If you experience any problems with our site (or, better yet if you find it's running faster), please let me know.

I'm already finding it's noticeably faster, without question.

WOW
We are only able to get dial up in our rural area and the new server is like lightning speed. I no longer have time to go get a cup of coffee while a page downloads. Fantastic change.

As others have mentioned, page loading is much quicker.

I'm not so sure about posting, though, and I just encountered an outright problem with the "Processing ..." page—the one where you get this message: "Sit tight... We are taking you back to:"

I didn't get taken back, on more than one occasion. The status bar at the bottom of my screen (using Firefox 2.0.0.16) would display "Done," with the browser remaining on that page until I clicked to go elsewhere.

This was not occurring earlier in the day.

Testing posting response.

Frank, the "taking u back" took c.7 seconds. Seems fine.

Same time when editing this post.

The new server does seem faster. There is one change that is not working so well on my computer, though. A lot of the posts are now wider than my screen, which was not the case before. In other words, to read them I have to go back and forth on each line with the side-to-side arrow. This could of course just be my computer, but nothing was that wide before.

Thanks for asking for feedback--I really appreciate it.

Son of a gun, you're right.

Now if we could just get the "printer friendly" pages working

I agree - it is loading faster now. There still is a bit of a delay when posting a message, but it is less than it used to be.

Thanks for making the move!

Thanks for your feedback everyone.

Keep in mind delays can be caused by a number of things, including slowness somewhere on the Internet between your browser and our server.

If you saw the route the code actually takes to get to you, you would be amazed it ever makes it there smile

For example, the picture below shows the route from my house to our server. Notice it went through 10 places before arriving (and timed out in 2 of them).
Most of these are "Routers", which can sometimes be very slow.

[Linked Image]

I've seen it take as many as 18 or 20 "hops" to get to the server. And that's just the path to get there, then whatever you requested (a page, a thread, a picture) has to make the journey back before it displays in your browser.

Clear as mud? laugh

That would be at the top of my PW "wish list."

However, I have discovered through trial and error that if you copy and paste a thread into Word, it comes out formatted pretty well. (Pasting it into WordPerfect creates a nightmare of gobbledygook.) The threads get WAY long, though. Just a run of the mill 12 page P$$ thread turns into 60 pages or so of a Word document... eek

Glad to see someone other than the seismology community still goes with Suns. We do all our heavy lifting on Suns both research, networking, database and file servers, and they have proven to be so reliable for us. I have noticed an improvement in PW posting speed, although as PW points out, this is subject to the vagaries of interim servers and Web traffic as much as the server itself.

Sorry Frank...can't tell much difference here in MI...

MK...that copy/paste thing with MS Word has been my workaround for a long time...we still have some MainFrame apps with NO SPELL CHECK...I'm always amazed how some people in high profile jobs send out miss spelled and grammatically incorrect emails... eek

and we refer to Word Perfect as Word Pathetic... laugh

It does seem faster, but the last two posts that I made showed up in triplicate and I noticed that Apple had made a post that showed up in triplicate. Is this a 'system' issue or something on my end?

Thanks, John
