I don't know why but I can't seem to be talk to someone while I'm busy playing the piano. I have to try to speak the words on the strong beats but yet I see other people talking away while they play. I wish I could do this.

It's okay, I have a whole lot of trouble doing this too. Fortunately, we don't need to do this on stage! laugh (Unless it's a comedy act.)

I can do it if it's idle chatter, short sentences. But if it requires deep thought I couldn't.

Sometimes people at the senior center try to engage me in conversation while I'm playing. I find it almost impossible to do, even if I'm playing something easy.

I do find it hard. But espcially in a church situation it's helpful to have this skill when playing with an instumentalist.

Here's a funny story about talking while playing. I was accompanying middle school instrumentalists in a recital and I was playing for a xylophone who had trouble with coordination of hands and reading the music. During the middle of the song she completely lost her place. So I decided to find the closest measure number and I leaned over and whispered the number while playing. She did fine though smile

Current repertoire:
Bach: P&F in E flat Book II
Beethoven: Sonata Op. 57 1st movement
Kennan: Three Preludes
Schumann: Concerto

"Why would you want to?"

Actually, I wouldn't want to do this. It's just that people cometimes don't even notice you're engaged in playing piano and want to ask unrelated questions or just chat. I'm sure someone listening would wonder what on earth had happened to my piano playing skills as they saw me try to carry on a conversation.

I used to have trouble with talking while playing, too.

I do think it is necessary in some cases. For example, in the choral ensemble that I was in this past year, is the director wasn't there' she would allow me to teach the class. It is necessary to sometimes ask for more sound from the altos, tell the sopranos to use the correct vowel shape, etc. while playing with the choir singing.

Just my 2 cents.

Working On:

BACH: Invention No. 13 in a min.
GRIEG: Notturno Op. 54 No. 4
VILLA-LOBOS: O Polichinelo

Next Up:

BACH: Keyboard Concerto in f minor

I know musicians who can do this, but I'm not there yet. If you're playing for dances sometimes the caller or dance teacher needs to have a short conversation, and as pianoloverus says sometimes at senior centers, nursing homes, etc, it would be a nice skill to have - like a cocktail pianist. I've known several fiddlers who can just chat away while playing really fast stuff.

In our band we play medleys of tunes for indeterminate numbers of times before we change tunes. We used to put a foot up to signal tune changes, and all of us would have to do so so that we all knew that everyone was on the same page. That was a real chore to get used to. One of our fiddlers to this day says she can now raise her leg up, but she can't put it down yet. Now we use a loud "hup!" from the lead fiddler, which is standard in Irish traditional music circles.

I can listen and nod if I agree, but I can't talk. Yet. smile

I can understand that some might consider it an inability to "multi-task," but for most of us playing the piano involves total physical and mental co-ordination, so not being able to talk while playing simply indicates your level of involvement in your playing.

On the other hand, if one were a pianist in a cocktail lounge, dining lounge or at a piano bar, the ability to chat with customers while playing could be a decided asset. However, would I raise some hackles if I said that the type of music usually played in such venues may - or at certain moments can - require less concentration?

Directing a choir or band from the piano is somewhat different, too, I would think, in the skills that it requires compared to carrying on a two-sided conversation about the merits and failures of NAFTA while playing a Bach fugue.

I once saw 2 musicians sightreading a piano duet (a hard one... probably by Liszt) together and they were literally chatting! Sometimes people try to talk to me while I'm playing and I can only nod and then ignore them. That makes me seem a bit rude.

If I get too involved in the music, my speech becomes a weird rhythmic monotone.
It's so bizarre, I try to avoid answering questions when I'm playing. It comes up at home when my girlfriend needs a question answered in the middle of some massive opus - she's used to my strange answers by now. It was like learning a second language for her.

This usually happens only when I am reading music from a book.

Can't talk while playing? I have the opposite problem - I can't play while talking. smokin

I do find it possible to play while singing, however - as long as the song I'm singing is related to the music I'm playing.

I spent a summer prior to my junior year in college playing the piano and singing country western and other popular songs in a honky tonk bar in Central City Colorado - mostly using fake books. Did wonders for my hand/eye/brain coordination.

I can do this. I don't remember practicing how to do it.

It feels like 2 different parts of brain working.
Which is very interesting.

Maybe it's somehow connected to the focus on ear playing and the non ability to sight read.

Franz Liszt used to converse with his company while playing the piano for them.

When I teach, I can talk at easy spots in the music that I'm demonstrating, like "Watch the next measure." But if I have to concentrate on a difficult spot, I catch myself being unable to talk.

Not for me! I sight read well enough, and I'm comfortable talking while playing. Compared to the way others are describing it anyway. I remember that speaking in rhythm with the music thing, but it hasn't happened for years.

Perhaps I have a natural talent for polyphony! grin

if you mastered the piece you can talk

Sorry for my English, I know it sucks, but I'm trying to improve.

I'm not sure why anyone would hope to be able to talk while playing. Isn't the music where the focus should be? Isn't the music enough?

You must never have to deal with impatient loved ones who don't want to sit through an entire sonata to ask a question. I would rather attempt to give some sort of answer while I continue to play, rather than stop what I'm doing, or demand they come back in 20 minutes heh!

It's useful for ordering a cup of tea, or lunch grin

I've figured out how I got this skill; teaching dancing for years (speaking while demonstrating or leading). I learnt to speak on a separate channel I suppose. Conducting probably also helps, who knows...?
