Condoleezza Rice Opts for Mozart Concerto

Anyone had the opportunity to be in the audience for this event? I'm curious to hear more about Rice's performance of the Mozart concerto.

That's pretty interesting. I remember hearing she was a pianist before.

I wonder how long she had to practice to bring that movement of the concerto back from her younger days when she probably played a lot more. Once thing's for sure, that's a great concerto!

It is the good life for Condi now: A tenure position where she probable "teaches" five hours a year and getting to PRACTICE and PLAY with the Philly Orchestra!!
While I am a fan of Franklin, I cringed as she gave the Aretha treatment to the Gluck aria at the end of the clip. An opera album would be indeed interesting..

I heard her play the first few measures of a Brahms Intermezzo on a TV feature a few years ago. You could tell she's 'all right' but you couldn't really tell more.

I've been hoping she'd enter one of those amateur competitions. ha

Didn't Condoleezza accompany Yo Yo Ma once? I'm sure it was a very 'political' thing for Mr. Ma, and doubtful he cared much for the then current resident of the White House.

Well the reviews are in!
Apparently, the Philadelphis Orchestra and Condi played the "warm-up" for Aretha, who showed up on stage only after intermission. Condi played only the second mvt of K466, and per NYT critic:
"Ms. Rice, chic in sleeveless white and sparkling black, joined the orchestra for the Romance from Mozart’s Piano Concerto in D minor (K. 466), her by-the-numbers account entirely respectable for someone whose day job lay elsewhere. An efficient paddle through Smetana’s “Moldau,” and on to intermission; not even the Fabulous Philadelphians get to overtax Ms. Franklin’s crowd."
Ouch!!

Aretha accompanied herself on the piano for some opera arias and, get THIS: She sang Nessun Dorma to a RECORDING while the Philly Orchestra sat there, apparently!!

I probably would have cringed a few times if I'd been sitting there.

But, according to Reuters News Service, "The performance was expected to raise $580,000 for an annual program that invites low-income children to attend concerts and master classes at the center."

I should be happy to cringe.

Condoleezza Rice is incredibly intelligent and accomplished. Why, in the name of all that's holy, did she get mixed up with Bush II?

You don't have to be incredibly intelligent to be a conservative, but all incredibly intelligent people (who care about other people)are.

I don't know how intelligent I am though I do consider myself to be on the conservative side of the spectrum. I guess I am a fiscal conservative and a social liberal. However I don't believe in supporting politicians just because of the political label they give themselves. Every one of these people has to be taken on their own merits. In this regard, I think there's no escaping the conclusion that Bush II was a complete disaster. A terrible president who signficantly eroded the relevance and prospects of the United States. I still marvel at the fact that Condeleeza Rich would be involved with such an unrepentent Bozo.

Just had to say that. But this is not a forum for politics so I will now apologize!

Is there any way we can hear her performance of the middle movement of the Mozart concerto somewhere?

Evidently, as compared to conservatives with such caring tendencies as, say, not giving a flying one about the welfare state and demanding that others follow their own personal principles.

I don't know his personal politics, but Rachmaninoff despised both the pre-revolution Russian regime and the far-left Communist regime that replaced it.

As for the United States of America, he said this:

Quote
“In his last days he spoke with pride of his newly acquired American citizenship, remarking,

“This is the only place on earth where a huyman being is respected for what he is and for what he does, and it does not matter who he is or where he is from.”

From "Sergei Rachmaninoff, a Bio-Bibliography" by Robert Cunningham.

Just wondering where that diagram came from originally.

Also always thought Condi Rice seemed too talented in general for the Bush administration, yet she was enthusiastic about the Iraq war, so she can't have been quite as smart as she appeared.

But anyone who bothers to keep up serious practice on an instrument must have some worthwhile qualities. I'm glad she has the opportunity to perform.
