There is no information in the piano atlas other than it was a Canadian company. It probably has no value, as there are more old pianos offered than buyers, or even takers for those that are offered for free.

I can't agree less with BDB. It probably does have value. They were among the best pianos made in its day. Typical values (sold prices)are 300-500 dollars for good working units. You can expect more if in good cosmetic condition, or if it has had extensive, recent work to bring it up to snuff. Typical prices of those units are in the $800 range. In poor condition they are often of little or no value. Show me a photo and I can tell you more about it, and its age. Changes are high that it is between 1900 and 1920, as that was when the company produced the most pianos. If you are considering 'throwing it away' drop me a line, as I am in the process of collecting and preserving any pianos made by R.S. Williams and will pick them up from most areas of central Ontario for free (will pay for some models).

I'd love to get any photos of it regardless to add to my 'online museum' currently being put together.

Cheers,

Jeremy Williams

Why does this look fishy to me? Two 'different' people, first time posters. An email address no_email@google?

Richard Sugden Williams, who first began in Hamilton making melodeons, opened his own shop in 1854. Later on he took control of the Canadian Piano Company in 1888. In 1909 the firm changed to become the R.S. Williams & Sons Ltd.

This firm went head to head with the Heintzman Company of Canada for the best instruments manufactured in this country of that time period. By 1932 the company had shut down.

There is a very good book written by Ladislav Cselenyi-Granch you can purchase from the Natural Heritage/ Natural History now part of the Dundurn Group of publishers. The book is titled Under the Sign of The Big Fiddle. Here it is for you to purchase.......

The Williams family had a very large collection of early musical instruments many of which are now in The Royal Ontario Museum, Toronto. Also in Oshawa, there is a wonderful collection of 18 photographs depicting various aspects of the Williams business. These photos are located at the Robert McLaughlin Gallery.

I can still remember as a small boy driving into downtown old Toronto with my parents and seeing the big violin up on the building......

Serial number 14000 starts 1893. I have a model of a Williams upright here at the moment. It is the New Scale Williams, the one with the reversed agraffes. This was their top of the line model. If you would like photos let me know and I will shoot a photo album of this one. Here are a few sample shots............after left clicking on this link below left click once on the first photo, and this will open up the album to larger photos.

Hey AJF,

I'm sure nothing I write could dissuade you from thinking something's fishy, but just out of curiosity, what on earth could be the motive behind the posts not being legit?

Feel free to message me, but I prefer to keep my email private.

What Dan writes is all fairly accurate. The company actually continued on up until 1954, however only as a shell of the former company. Ladislav oddly is only partially correct in this regard. The company did enter receivership in '32 but was reorganized and did survive albeit no longer under family control. After several attempts to branch out into other endeavors, including canoes and radios under the Victor label, they became little more than a musical instrument parts seller. Interestingly, R.S.'s grandson went on to found Danforth Radio continuing on the family link to music.

The main office building Dan writes of, is sadly long gone. At the time of its building, it was one of the highest buildings in the whole commonwealth reaching an astounding ten stories. It was torn down to make way for the 'arcade' building, which last I checked was a Loblaws. The factory in Oshawa endured a similar fate being razed to the ground for a new police station. Regrettably I did not see either building, too young for that.

The Oshawa library has many more than just 18 photos, its been many years since I was there - but I would say the number is approaching a hundred. Some photos at the library are available online (i.e. http://images.ourontario.ca/oshawa/details.asp?ID=41859).

Thanks Piano Guy & Dan for the photos!
