At a master class ar Mannes IKIF today, the teacher said that the single notes played at the intro of the Winter Wind Etude left the listener not knowing what key they were in(a minor isn't established until the chords come in). He said it was the same for the introduction to the First Ballade.

Other examples you can think of in Chopin with this same idea?

But the second chord is the dominant 7th of the key?

Oh I know. Maybe it's not really a keyless introduction now that I think of it...just first time I heard it, during the long chord at the beginning, I was like "This is a weird chord, I wonder where it will go" So not really an introduction, just an opening chord that leaves you hanging.

All four ballades start on the same pitch, but the effect isn't as great in the 1st or 3rd Ballade... Some in the 4th, and the most in the 2nd.

The introduction to the third scherzo is totally atonal, mysterious, and pretty cool. That piece is probably in my top 5 favorite chopin pieces.
