A few days later, I touch off a few strings of them at once to scare him (he's 19). It worked, and he's chasing me through house - I come around the corner and slammm! into the doorframe w/the back of my hand. Check out the freaky looking picture of my hand. I thought it was so broken. Unbelieveably, I had two gigs that weekend, and I was able to play them both - now it's a week later and my hand is totally fine. Whew! By the way - it never bruised at all. Anybody have any idea what kind of injury that looks like? (Besides birthing an alien life form from the back of your hand)

Hi David, That looks nasty! I would have it checked just to be sure. I had something called deep vein thrombosis in my right arm. Swelled up to twice it's normal size. I was in ICU for 4 days because of that. That bump may be blood that has travelled to that area. But I'm no doc so ... better safe than sorry.

.....That bump may be blood that has travelled to that area.... Yes -- not so much 'traveled' as leaked. That would be a hematoma. Probably it's either that, or a more general "inflammatory response." Either of these would be a harmless swelling that will go down by itself.

Ah ... that looks like a post-traumatic ganglion cyst. Check it out: http://www.emedicinehealth.com/ganglion_cyst/page12_em.htmHematomas are rare in the carpal/metacarpal region.

Yikes - thanks (I think) for posting the link to the ganglion cyst. My hand is about 80% better and the Physical Therapist said it will just take time. Ahhh.... I hate to wait!

I hope you get well soon - there's nothing worse than having to stay away from the piano because of a hand injury.
Well, there MIGHT be worse things, I suppose. I haven't found them, yet.

Hi David, I've got the exact same thing on the back of my right hand. I didn't think too much of it, until I realized it's been about a month now, and the little bump is still there. I can play without feeling any pain, but when I shake hands with someone and they press on it, it's painful. Also, when I twist something, I feel the pain. Has yours gone away by itself? I'm thinking about paying the doc a visit.
