I slept through the dreary soccer match ... but then I'm a rugger-bugger ... feeling gut-torn and depressed after NZ clobbered our Springboks 32-12 at Auckland.

What was really unfair was the fact holland remained with 11 players for so long. After Nigel de Jong's planted his studs into Xabi Alonso's chest and didn't get the red card the only fair result would be the spanish victory.

The goal was totally legal, and what was horrible was the huge amount of faults holland did, attempting to break the spanish olé.

Well its great that you only watch it with 'spanish eyes', but the faults were on both teams as I said. The kick by de Jong should have definetly been a red card. However

-Puyol pulling robben down should have been a second yellow card for him, and a free kick
-Iniesta kicking a player outside of the game should have been a red card (Webb gave a free kick, so he SAW it happen! Its FIFA rules to give a red card for violence outside the play!)
-The Netherlands should have gotten a corner kick the minute before Iniesta scored (the ball was touched by a defender AND the goal keeper, there was no doubt whatsoever)
-1 of the 3 players was offside during the attack of the goal. If 1 of the participating players of an attack is offside, there has to be flagged!
-Over 3 players of Spain have been asking throughout the whole game for yellow cards. Fifa rules say if you ask for a yellow card, you should get one (This would mean that Ramos, Puyol and Iniesto would have all had their second yellow cards)

I'm definetly not saying the Netherlands played a fair match, but I am saying that the spains didn't do either. Like I said it was a terrible match, and a shame for 2 great soccer countries, to screw up a final like this. Spain can be happy with their victory, but they should delete the match from their memories (as should we dutch), because this had nothing to do with good soccer.

Think the ref did the best he could to keep the game from turning into a 5-a-side joke. Both sides but particularly the Dutch took advantage - Holland certainly have some cheek to criticise him.

Well, the clumsy Americans have been in every WC since 1990, and Andorra has been in how many?? :P

I know. Tough to qualify out of Europe from a country that small.

I'm glad Spain won. The Dutch were incredibly cynical. I started hoping Holland would win, but after seeing about 20 minutes of Van Bommel and De Jong kicking everything that moved save a football, I switched over to cheering for Spain. Holland was a disgrace yesterday.

dutch should have got 2 more corners, when the refs didn't see. refs in the world cup were just terrible, especially in the final and some other important ones. they really should have used a replay for each call.

Agreed, some players (especially van bommel and de jong) were a disgrace, but please lets not forget Puyol and Iniesta. Especially de jong's karate kick, and Iniesta's violence outside of the play were a low point in soccer history. To be honest, nobody deserved to win it. heck the best soccer matches were from the germans! Seen Germany vs Argentina?

Germany vs. Argentina was a good match. I think the best match of the tournament was Germany vs. Uruguay on Saturday.

I'm a huge fan of the Dutch style of play. I hope they go back to that more. The best world Cup match I can remember seeing was Holland vs. Brazil quarterfinal of the 1994 tournament.

Well the dutch style of play is now in Spain smile. Reikaard, Cruijff and Koeman introduced it to Barcalona ( a team of which I'm a big fan of ), and since I think 7 of the players of Spain National was from Barca (catalonie rulez), they did some great ticky-tacky soccer smile. To bad none of the teams were able to play yesterday. Ow well, 2 years EK, hopefully that will bring us all a more satisfying final.

A dull match, the Germans romping over the shadow of a team. Germany didn't impress me in general, and they got knocked out in their first tough match up.

For me the best match was Brazil-Nederlands. Brazil was brillant and tough, nasty even, and then got toppled due to a mistake. Brazil was by far the most interesting team to watch.

I enjoyed Ghana-Uruguay as well, a hard fought match, with some brillant play from both teams.

It's a shame the game was so violent and foul-prone - I'm sick to death of seeing diving players... "Oh, he touched my shoulder - better fall down writhing in pain on the ground. Sweet - got a free kick!"

The Karate Kick definately warranted a red card, but so did Iniesta smacking a player because the ref didn't give his previous dive any attention. The players are ALL very talented, and NONE of them need to be diving and fouling as much as they did - it's just a shame. Probably one of the worst matches I've seen so far, besides the incredible cheating that Saurez pulled off against Ghana. The funny thing is that when Uruguay were playing Germany for 3rd place, Suarez was roundly booed every single time he touched the ball, and the announcers just started complaining about it the whole time: "It's too bad the crowd is booing Suarez - he did what any professional [cheating jerk] player would do" - (doesn't make it right) - or "Oh, this is really affecting Suarez's confidence - he's only 23 years old, for pete's sake! Leave him alone, you mean fans!"

Personally, I voted for the Dutch simply because Spain beat Germany (that's how it goes when you have to justify who you root for) - but their violent play was a real turn-off. On the other hand, the constant diving of Iniesta, and the manhandling, fouling of Puyol and Pique were also a turnoff. So by the end of the game, I was just glad it was over, and now I'm left with a feeling of malaise at the whole thing..
I know they don't have to play that way..

He did the right thing, Suarez. Might have got a red card, maybe should have, but he did the right thing.

Come on, folks, this is football. It's sports, not the FICGM cup. (International Federation of Competitive Good Manners). The whole point is to let the other guy have it on the field ... and then exchange your shirt with him after the whistle blows.

Lucky for you that you don't have to face at our Andorran national rugby team, the Izards. The terror of the Pyrenees.

LOL - it'll never be mistaken for the FICGM cup - that's for sure!
I guess I'm old-fashioned and believe in fair play in sports - it colors my outlook on certain players. Maybe it's normal behavior in soccer, but I only watch it once every 4 years, so I'm not used to it.
I watched some of the games at the local Soccer Club, and many of the players there commented on the diving negatively. They had no problem with fouls, but they seemed to have a big problem with diving.

Oh well - we'll see how it goes in the next World Cup.
