Am I correct that the only Roland DPs with the ivory touch and escapement keyboards are the RD-700 series?

Does anybody know, mechanically, what the difference is (if any) between the PHA alpha II keyboard on the RD-300 and the RD-700's ivory touch/escapement keyboard?

PHA alpha has hammers from rear to front (similar design like Fatar's TP40). PHAII has hammers from centre to rear - this design is the most common today. I was not able to find out the PHA alpha pictures but have a look on these videos. It's plant tour from Roland's Italy factory and you can see assembly of HP-307 (PHAIII action - mostly the same like PHAII in RD-700GX only third sensor is added) and white F-110 which has PHA alphaII. Generaly the PHA alpha design is older and touch is softer.

As stated by Pesk, the two actions are completely different. There is a number of Roland products that feature ivory touch with escapement. The higher end HP series pianos have ivory surface with escapement, the mini-grands also do. The alpha action is generally fitted to lower-spec pianos.

Is the 'alpha' action also a little smaller in size? I notice that it tends to be used in the more compact instruments.

Cheers,
James

The "alpha" and non-alpha key actions are completely different. It is the same as with Yamaha's GHS and GH. Very simalar names but different designs and very different feel. Like the GHS, "Alpha" is very light, almost what you'd call semi-weighted. Some people like it because it takes less effort to play

Thank you all for your thoughts and info. Very helpful. I found the other products with the ivory touch and escapement, and tried to HP-305 today and liked it a lot.
