I’m surprised someone hasn’t started a “July piano bar” thread already… so I’ll get it started off!

Here is a new song I wrote entitled “In the shadows of your love”. For some reason, most of my songs are love songs. I reckon that love is a mystery that saturates the human emotion like nothing else. Music and love are a lot alike. Both can bring happiness and sadness! grin

"In the shadows of your love"

I hope you enjoy it!

Hey, Rick~~

Very nice love song - and the fact you accompany yourself so marvellously always amazes me.

From where do you get your ideas for the lyrics/music? Do you create them simultaneously, or does one spark the other. An incident or a dream - from where does this well spring for you?

A great way to start the July Piano Bar thumb

Thanks for the comments, Glen, especially coming from such a superb musician and pianist as you!

You are not the first to ask where I get the ideas for my songs and the music that goes with them. Not that any of my songs are all that good, but some of my ideas are sparked by a single event or personal experience or the experiences of others. For example, the idea for my last song was sparked when my wife told me that she loved shadows. We talked about shadows and what they mean.

The music just comes to me out of thin air. Sometimes I’ll just noodle around on the piano and put the melody/music together with the lyrics. It’s very difficult to come up with a melody or a tune that is completely original. No matter what the melody of a new song, there is another one that is at least similar that has already been written.

Actually, I plan to record another new song today entitled “Why in the world would you love me”.

Thanks again, for your comments and I look forward to hearing more of your recordings!!

Take care,

Rick

Hi everybody,
I didn't post any video for like 3 months? Is it even possible? Damn work! Kept me so busy that I wasn't able to do anyhing useful, like record new piano videos. At least I was able to practice. Anyway, to compensate for my absence, I have two videos instead of just one, although the second one is really really short smile

The first one is Melancholy of Love by Hans-Günter Heumann:

Second one is Alois Sarauer's "U muziky" or "Merrymaking" as I would translate it to English.

Hi Rick ~
Thanks for the most excellent description from where but a piece of your musical creativity is generated. I find it fascinating.

David ~ great to see you again. For someone having started playing one and a half years ago, you are an inspiration. That Sarauer piece is just not long enough - well done! You bring out the contemplative aspect of Melancholy of Love very nicely. Thanks for sharing your music.

Rick - very nice song, The Shadows of Your Love. I used to write songs (humorous ones mostly). The words and music seemed to just flow into my head from somewhere in space or time. Then they stopped. This was during my time away from piano, so I have never recorded any of them. I really suck at singing and playing together, anyway. I kinda miss that creative flow in my life. I wonder what changed?

EDIT - and no, before you ask, I was not on drugs at the time. grin

David, Melancholy of Love was certainly aptly named. Very interesting piece played beautifully. U Muziky is like a nice little dance, but it's way too short. I need more.

I always think of an old silent movie when I hear that piece and this was no exception. Nicely done.

Who was turning the page on that one?

I'd like to jump on Rickster's and David's Love Boat before it leaves the dock.

I'm a big Paul Simon fan and this is one of my favorite love songs that he wrote. There are tons of guitar/vocal covers of this on YouTube so I thought I'd give a piano version a go.

Bill,
That is one of my favorite all-time modern popular songs. Eva Cassidy, one of the purest talents, put that one on the map for me - so clear, so absolutely beautiful, it'll move you to tears. It is on her Time After Time CD.

You do this piece justice, my friend. Thanks so much.

Rick "Shadows of Your Love"

Very well constructed. Nice melody and lyrics that are singable and potentially "hooky". I would rewrite the line "it's always sunny weather" It's a bit too commonplace and you miss a chance for irony playing on the shadows metaphor. Perhaps, something like "chase away the cloudy weather"

Also, the piece cries out for a bridge as well as expanding the shadow theme, you could use the bridge to explain why you are in the shadows...

Rickster, another great song from you. I love the lyrics too.
David, you and I seem to like the same type of music. I always like your pieces.
LadyPayne and Augustina, incidentally my daughter just had a recital last month playing this piece (in a simpler version). I like your smooth interpretation of that famous waltz.
Bill, I especially like your accompaniment in this piece, I always envy you and Rickster, it always seems natural from you guys.

RICKSTER-Another "lovely" song and start to the July pianobar! I also really liked your lyrics on this one.

DAVID-Yea, you're back! "Melancholy of Love", I loved it-great sensitive playing-it reminds me of some other piece or composer's style, but I can't put my finger on it...U Miziky is nice and short and folksy. (and I really love the "new" ceramic piece)!

LADYPAYNE&AUGUSTINA - great duet! My mom played this all the time a while back, so it's a particular favorite of mine.

BILL-Your submissions seem to always bring back good memories for me. We are big Paul Simon fans here, too. Really nice accompaniment!

Great beginning to July everyone!

Last recital, I submitted a piece called "Somewhere". It was about a couple got separated as the guy moved to another place. The girl stayed, missing the guy and was wondering how he was doing and if he was missing her too.

This month I wrote the sequence to that piece called "The Journey". It is in the same key as the other piece. It is about the other person who went on the journey, missing the girl he left but at the same time anxious and excited about what was waiting for him ahead. Here it is

The Journey

I plan on having another piece to follow this. It will be the darkest one where the girl receives the new that the guy has moved on.
