Ooh, so sorry to hear this!!! Wishing you a speedy recovery! Be sure to tell the specialist that you are a pianist, talking to him/her about things you both can do to make the healing process faster and more complete.

And keep a positive attitude, in the scheme of things, if you're going to injure a finger, I would guess that the LH middle finger is the best one, since you need your thumb and pinkie for octaves and it's not often that we need to stretch our middle finger. I think that will allow you to play without much negatice effect (after it's healed of course!) because of the shape of the hand.

Sending positive finger thoughts your way!!!

Ouch! Industrial injuries are scary, I got caught in a conveyor belt once a long time ago.

Good luck, Dennis, hope you heal fast and can get back to your piano soon.

Ouch, Dennis!

Whatever you do, don't test it to see if you still have pain or to see if it is getting better. The more pain-free days you have the better. Patience is the key element.

Look forward to knowing what the specialist tells you next week. Take it easy. Hope you get past this quickly so you can get back to you persuing your interests, including your most excellent piano!

So sorry to hear about your injury! I broke a thumb a couple years ago - no fun being in a splint or cast, but I was grateful not to need surgery. Hope you're on the mend and back to playing soon!

Son of a ... Sorry to hear of your misfortune Dennis, hopefully it will heal well and not be a factor in a few months. Morodiene idea seems to be a good option.

In the meantime you can learn some 1980s pop hits. (Those keyboard players never used their left hand.) In fact, something like an old Flock of Seagulls song can be played with one or two fingers! I occaisionally learn some of that old synthesizer stuff so I can both play with sound design and have the satisfaction of learning a whole song in 30 minutes grin

HA . . .the guitarist with his eyes covered is a nice touch as is the drummer's kicking of the bass drum. I remember this as the theme song of VW commercials some years ago. I have an appointment with an orthopedic surgeon Monday morning. Wish me luck.

Dennis - I wish you a speedy recovery! At least, with your current "condition", you can instantly communicate your "displeasure" with any "bad drivers" you may come across!!! grin

May your other fingers grow "smarter" during the interim! smile

Oh no, Dennis! I just got back into town and this was the first thread I read. I'm so sorry about your finger. But did you really fill out the paperwork BEFORE taking your mangled, painful finger to the hospital?!?! eek

Let us know what the orthopedic surgeon says. I hope it will be a speedy recovery.

Wow Dennis that sucks. I sure hope your ambidextrous as that skill will come in REAL handy come time to wipe if you know what I mean!!

BTW, make sure people you pass don't think your flipping them off; especially when driving with that middle finger splint on.

Wishing you a speedy recovery.

I guess this will be a good time to practice your reading skills eh? You've got to do SOMETHING to stay in sync with your piano needs!

Hi Dennis - Argh!! I feel your pain.

It was my Senior Year of college practicing an insane amount every day for my senior juries (and then recital). One afternoon one of the vocal majors tapped on my window and said "Let's get out of here and play some basketball".

The "Crrrraaaack..." from my pinky getting caught under his right shoulder echoed through the gym.

I looked at that and said "I'll be back next year". One year later I was back at it, but in the interm, I really got a lot of left hand practice on the piano.

All that to say I hope you get better quick - make lemonade out of the lemon by practicing just as much with your other hand. Maybe it will increase your ability to be amphibious.... uh, ambidextrous.

Back from the orthopedic surgeon visit. He did additional x-rays that confirm the fracture. The good news is that the tendon is intact so no surgery will be required. The bad news is that I have to wear a splint for about 6 weeks. He said do not lift anything heavier than a towel with your left hand. When I asked about playing piano, he said not to do that either for the time I'm in the splint.

I could, of course, work on right hand only exercises, but I may just take a little break from the piano for awhile. That should rekindle my interest and desire when I can play again. Thanks for all the good wishes and prayers that you have all sent my way.
