Why is it that I always see pianos that are plugged into the wall when they aren't equipped with a player system? (and they're not digital either)What is the plug for?

It powers the lo-jack system for pianos. When your piano is stolen by burglars, it sends a message to your computer to tell where it is. That way the thieves always know where the piano is, because they took your computer, too.

It's a climate control system inside the piano. It should be kept plugged in at all times.

Maybe he thought the cord operated a fragrancer inside the piano.

The purpose of the fragrancer is to resuscitate exhausted piano tuners.

When I was a kid our first Yamaha upright had a plug too (40 years ago). It was just connect to a 60-Watt light bulb inside the piano.

Mice don't like to munch and build nests in the dark. There is nothing like being caught in a mousetrap in the dark. Be considerate, upgrade to a 100 watt bulb. grin

Simple. It's for administering electric shocks to the pianist when they play wrong notes.

Actually, I did that. One day, when I was 6 or 7 years-old, I removed the bottom panel from the piano, unscrewed the light bulb from socket, and stuck my finger into it. It was shocking! My first experience with electricity.

I'm glad you survived the attack and are alive to tell about it!
