I am having trouble understanding the scoring system on my audition. What is considered a high score, is 35 a high score? I also heard of "Superior" and "Excellent" scores, what are these? My classmate entered in State whereas I entered in International; what is the difference?

Thank you, my piano teacher doesn't think it is important to explain this system to his students.

The C's refer to commendable aspects of your audition. The A's refer to areas needing attention. The more C's you have and the fewer A's you have, the better.

I believe 35 is a very respectable score though I am new to auditions.

I do not know how Superior and Excellent designations are calculated. Could be based on the final score.

When it comes to State vs. International, I think your program, the roster of songs you play, determines the category. That, along with your score, will determine whether or not you 'make' State or International. However, again I am new to this, and not sure of the details.

Ask your teacher to let you see the Guild Syllabus which has explanations of everything you've asked. Briefly, the number of pieces a student plays determines the category--District, State, National,International, Artist as well as the age, and level of entry.

The scoring system is such that it is almost assured the entrant will pass unless the audition is a complete bomb. If you have more 'C's' than 'A's' then you definitely pass. 'C' equals 'Commendable' and 'A' equals 'Attention' meaning that particular aspect of the performance needs improvement.

Lots of variables as the judge's training influences that a lot as well as whether a liberal or very strict.

Still, ask the teacher to see the copy of the Guild Syllabus which has everything explained.

35 'C's' and a few or no 'A's' should mean a very good score.

AMAZING !!! This scoring system hasn't changed since I participated in the Guild's State auditions back in 1961 (when I was 14). Still have the report card in a scrap book - 30 C's and 2 A's. I got zapped on "fast passages" and "tonal depth."

StevenW - Congratulations on your score. Seems like you did just fine. And since you "pay" your teacher for lessons, he really ought to explain the scoring system to you. After all - the scores are intended as a tool to help you understand your strengths and weaknesses.
