It is the 23rd measure.In 4/4 time easure.RH(dotted eighth note followed by a sixteenth note.This repeats for 3 more beats.)I have been counting:1 a +a,2 etc. It's the left hand that I can't seem to figure out how it goes with the right hand. LH(quarter note which has a eighth note rest over it followed by an eighth note). This repeats for 3 more beats.Do you know of any books preferably with CD that are good at teaching rhythm?Thank you.Tango
It sounds as if the left hand in the measure in question is written in two voices. In other words, a quarter note is played and held for the length of a quarter note, and in the middle of the quarter note you are to play an eighth note.
Normally 1/16th notes are counted 1-e-&-a, 2-e-&-a, etc. Just for the sake of illustration let's assume that measure 23 has the following notes in the right hand:
1/4 | 1/4 | dotted 1/8 & 1/16 | 1/4
and the left hand has the following notes:
1/4 | 1/4 | 1/4 1/8 rest and 1/8 | 1/4
You could count the measure:
- 1-e-&-a, 2-e-&-a, 3-e-&-a, 4-e-&-a
- 1, 2, 3-e-&-a, 4
- 1 and, 2 and, 3-e-&-a, 4 and
Regardless of which you use the 1/8th note in the left hand would be struck on the "&" of beat three and the 1/16 note would be struck on the "a" of beat three. The left hand 1/4 note in beat three would be held until the left hand 1/4 note in beat 4 is struck.
