Hi all,

Just been looking at purchasing a cheapish but high quality DP, and stumbled across the Yamaha YDP161 - tell me what I'm missing? I'm comparing it to the P155, but it seems to be the same (GH action, 128 polyphony) but 100 GBP cheaper! Plus it has 3 pedals, nice cabinet....etc.....

What am I overlooking?

Hi, I see 3 velocity layers instead of 4, no USB, no Split or Clearance, nothing about string ressonance or key-off samples. Try to play with hedphones first side-by-side with P-155. smile

I would think the reason to get a console DP is to play via speakers.
P155: 12W x 2 Amp (12 x 6) cm x 2 speakers.
YDP161: 20W x 2 Amp (12cm x 6cm) x 2 Speakers.

The YDP161 has no AUX Out (L/L+R, R), this option is desirable should you want to future upgrade/supplement to external sound. I just received a P155 and am now looking to supplement the on-board speakers.

From what I’ve seen YDP161/P155 have the same price, it’s the YDP160 that’s cheaper by $150 (Kraftmusic).

The P155 has some refinements in the sound the YDP lacks. One more sample layer is the biggest of these. Then small things.

Also and this is why I don't like the YDP160/YDP161 are the controls. The user interface on the YDP is not so easy to use. Compare that the the row of buttons on the P155. The YDP may also lack a place to put a USB memory stick.

The best thing to do is download and read both user manuals.

One more thing. The YDP, Clavinova and P155 are all more or less machanically the same. they all attach to the stand using the same four machine screws and all of then come knock-down like Ikea furnature and the asembly instructs are abot the same for each. The cosmetic styles are different. the P pianos are a modern style while the YDPs are made to like a bit like an acoustic spinet piano.

All that said, nothing really wrong with the YDP. It's just not the same as a P155. It you are concerned about looks buy the LP140 stand that matches the P155.

No. Don't buy the YDP160 for it's extra 8W of power. Nor for it's internal speakers. they just aren't very good. Remeber that doubling the amp's power only gets you a 3dB gain in sound level. That's nearly nothing.

If the YDP lacks a line out then the P155 will "win" in terms of sound quality becaue you can easiy add an much larger amp and speakers.

The Polk R50 are the best I've found for a reasonable price. They go for just over $100 each but some time are on sale for half that. The hight from the floor of the drivers, a wide dispersion and narrow baffles combine to make them ideal for use with my P155. I think you can find better speakers (I know you can because I have some better sounding ones) but these are physically and cost wise a good match. I'd go with a 100WPC amp although I'm currently using a smaller 50WPC amp. I've found that the best predictor of how well a pair of speakers will sound with the P155 is their physical size. Bigger is better but after a point they become not practical. The R50 seem to me to be a good compromise

Hi, thanks for your responses. Quick question (and I can assume the answer) - is Yamaha good as a midi controller? By my reckoning, if I can get GH action and a nice cabinet with 3 pedals and half-pedal capability for less than a P155 price, I should, as I'm going to be running Garritan Steinway with it anyway. Anyone tried the YDP161 as a midi controller, or are all Yamahas the same 'underneath'?

Cheers,
P
