In commemoration of Robert Schumann's bi-centennial I am proud to announce an on-line recital of selections from Schumann's piano music. Over the past few months forum members have signed up for, and worked on, various pieces from all the stages of Schumann's output. The pieces and participants are listed below.

I would like to ask people to start submitting their files using our own Mr Mati's software. The code is still fairly preliminary so bear with us. Should you encounter any difficulties please send 'mati' a PM (private message - click on 'My Stuff' at the head of this page); or contact him by email at mati@maticomp.net

The link below will take you to mati's website and will step you through the process of submission. It is easy and self-explanatory.

Here is a link to some general help for recording yourself on the piano, and the use of a popular digital recorder called the Zoom H4 (they also make an H2):

Yeah. The codebase is young and hasn't been tested thoroughly. Known issues may include:

- Progress bar hanging at 100% (if that happens, do not worry - the upload most probably went through just fine). Both in the e-mail you receive and at the upload page there is a link to preview your submission after uploading, so you can check if everything went fine.

- Complete crash if using certain versions of Safari on MacOS X - one of my friends encountered a complete crash once and coulnd't make it happen again, but we know this is possible. In this case - upload also went ok. You can use a link from e-mail to check and listen.

If anything suspicious happens and you are not sure if your submission is ok, please feel free to contact me anytime.

I will be monitoring these threads and my mailbox constantly.

Thanks a lot for entrusting the technical side to me and my sincere apologies everything happened so late I wasn't even able to crash test it thouroughly frown

Best wishes!
M.

Haven't recorded the Grillen yet, but I need to get on that. I'm so sorry... graduating high school, track, and work got in the way! I do have time though... Lots of practicing tomorrow! Once I pull the score back out and work on some sections, it should come back like bread and butter.

I have not had the free time to learn the piece. 82/7. And as past experience has taught me that time/effort does not factor into consideration of the finished product, I cannot participate here.

Double post for bump: (trust me, I never double post unless I can't edit or if I NEED to bump something)

Got it recorded! It's good enough for me, anyway... Where do I upload it to, or can I e-mail the audio file to someone? If so, P.M. me your e-mail address, whoever I e-mail this to.

Really, OSK, less than 6 hours to practice and record? You're making the rest of us look bad! grin

Well, now that the flurry of weekend BBQs has passed, I hope to get a recording in the next couple of hours days.

By quoting your post, I saw how to do this kind of text, so thanks! laugh

Plus, I already learned the piece 3 or 4 years ago, so when I pulled out the music, after about 45 minutes, it was already under my fingers. I also worked on some musical details, primarily trying to do what the score said to do. smile

Plus, this piece is a blast to play, so I enjoyed practicing it and got more out of my practice time with it. laugh

Is it OK if I send in a recording full of errors, stumbles, and hesitations? smile I am currently on a foreign trip and don't have regular access to a piano so no opportunity for many takes. Darn!

Schumann's June 8 birthday I share, too!

Look forward enjoying all those wonderful pieces.

Stickied! I'll keep this bumped until the submission deadline passes. Once the recital is up and running, be sure to post it and I'll sticky it as well.

Thanks to Schubertian and Mati, this is a wonderful project!

Had been planning on getting a microphone so I could do an audio recording, but it didn't arrive in the post yet. I've made an HD video that I'll send a link to on youtube, but won't be able to upload any audio to the page.

FYI - I submitted selected etudes from the Symphonic Etudes in addition to the other short pieces I originally signed up for. Thanks to Schubertian and Mati for making all of this possible.

Go to www.dirpy.com. Copy/paste the URL of your video onto Dirpy. It will download your video into an mp3 file that you can upload onto the page.

I submitted mine. What a beautiful job you've done with the submission page, Mati. Very user-friendly. Great job!

And thanks to you too, Schubertian, for organizing this fun event.

Op. 4/1 Intermezzo uploaded! The upload speed was stupidly fast. You must have some good hardware behind this thing.

Just uploaded the g minor sonata, and I must say, that upload system is very nicely done!

But good grief, I had quite a time getting the recording made! Please note that the rest of this longish post is simply self-absorbed moaning about my trials and tribulations - you have been warned. I just need to vent about it.

I scheduled a tuning for the last Thursday in May, in anticipation. But the weather had been unseasonable cool and wet for a few days, and just a few days after the tuning, the weather changed again, and predictably, the piano went somewhat out of tune, which can be heard quite well in some places.

I had just done some preliminary recording, and was looking forward to spending the week working on the real deal, when what should happen but some seriously ugly malware attacked my computer late Sunday night, and I was up until the wee hours just trying to regain a minimum of control over it. I use this computer for doing recording; I don't use a standalone recorder. Aarrrggghhh!!!

But, using some helpful, if complicated, instructions from a anti-virus web forum, I thought I had rid my computer of the problem. At least it was more or less stable, and I could run programs, which had not been possible right after the attack. But, no, it turned out that the first infection opened the door to several other viruses!! The shortened version of that particular saga is that it took the entire week to clean out all the bugs (I hope).

I was able to do some recording between doing lengthy anti-malware processes. But after many hours of tense work on the computer, I got a painful muscle spasm in my shoulder, which is not the ideal thing for trying to play as well as possible. I managed to get rid of most of that in a couple of days.

So finally, yesterday, my computer got a clean bill of health from an anti-malware worker (although it's on probation for another day or so). And then I discovered that I was having problems with my sound card, and it appeared that all the recordings I had made between Tuesday and early Saturday were useless. I have to say, I almost gave up at that point. That was a tough moment.

But on reflection, I thought I might be able to salvage some of those preliminary takes that I had intended to redo. And I had the rest of Saturday and Sunday to record (Monday was not possible). So I tackled the audio problem. It still is mysterious to me what exactly was going on (it involved buffer sizes and changing drivers), but I will offer this bit of advice to anyone else doing computer-based recording - disconnect from the internet, so that it is (relatively) safe to turn off your anti-virus programs when recording.

So I ended up frantically trying to get usable takes for the last two days. I was really really really tired by then, and my left hand started to simply lose function at times (hey, was the ghost of Schumann haunting my efforts?). And the results sound like it. Sorry. What I uploaded is a mix of movements from those preliminary recordings that I didn't think were final, and these later overly-pressured ones. Last night I woke up in the middle of sleep with my right foot involuntarily twitching from all the nervous pedaling I had been doing!!

Ironically, before all this happened, I had decided to buy a new computer, but then decided it would be smart to wait until after this project was done. Had I gone ahead, it is likely that none of this would have happened. As the saying goes, "Delay is dangerous."

Hello
Im new to this. So people just record themselves playing for a submission and then what happens at the recital time? Is it just all recordings put together?
Thanks
