Here's one I just found :
http://www.youtube.com/watch?v=ql5oa0HGg7k&feature=pyv&ad=3809121972&kw=piano

(You may want to turn off the sound on the video due to the pianist's ability or the piano's tone)I wonder if the fallbaord is original because the inside of it is so plain compared to the rest of the piano? The legs are a bit much unless one has a huge space so the piano's design doesn't overpower it.

Any other pics or videos of particularly beautiful art cases?

I like the carvings and panels and such on uprights but for some reason I prefer grands to be plain. I don't know why.

I'll figure it out eventually.
Until then you may want to keep a safe distance.

PL,

This is my humble opinion - I do not think the cabinet work is original. Look at the underside of the lid, the lid prop, and (as you mentioned) the fallboard. They are all totally plain, which would not be in the rococo style that the rest of the piano is in.

The work looks spectacular, but I believe it was done after manufacture to a plain cabinet.

(Although I admit, I've been wrong before) smile

That makes sense to me especially because you've never been wrong. But I'm not sure...maybe some PW members can chip in and purcahse it for me? I promise to have this thoroughly investigated.

Anyone else not particularly impressed by the tone on this piano?

I met a dealer who had a very fancy artcase in his front window. He called it "My 401K".

I have to agree with Horowitzian. Its like an over iced cake, over the top and slightly turns the stomach for me.

This piano is one of my favorites. It is a Pleyel piano, made in 1846 and currently owned by the Yamamoto Collection.

[Linked Image]

Its design is elegant, and reflects good tastes possessed by the French; no wonder Chopin liked Pleyel pianos. smile

Interestingly enough this piano seems very similar to the Boesendorfer Chopin model except for the legs and arms.

http://www.boesendorfer.com/en/chopin.html

I saw this Bosie model in a NY showroom and always thought it was one the most beautiful I had ever seen "live". When I returned sometime later it had been sold to one of the Beatles' sons...the one who I think also became a singer.

Perhaps someone can post both pictures in the same post for comparison.

I think Bosendorfer's version is just a pale reflection of Pleyel's beautiful original cabinet design..

Here is a picture of this 1846 Pleyel being played in a concert. The pianist's name is Yuko Kawai.

As I posted earlier, another of my favorites is Liszt's own Chickering grand piano, which was made in 1867; it's sad that they don't craft pianos like this anymore.

I own this 6'6" Sohmer Style 10. It's one of 12 made according to the Sohmer records. Built in 1885 and originally owned by S.J. Pillow on 832 Railroad Ave in New York.

It's not as fancy as others but fancy enough. The Brazilian Rosewood is quite nice. One day I will finish the rebuilding.
As of now it has a new soundboard, bridges and pin block.
The next step is the refinishing.

The legs on Rod Verhnjak's 6'6" Sohmer piano are exactly the same as the legs on my Brazilian Rosewood Chickering Model 98.

There are only two endeavors that use the word "play", one is Sports and the other is Music; if the enjoyable essence of "play" is absent from either, you have missed the point entirely.

I don't usually like art cases on grands, but I like that Hardman.

I think that the recording was poor, and the playing perhaps poorer, but yes, the tone of the piano was quite underwhelming for a Steinway B. I noted that they seem quite proud to mention that the strings are original to the piano. After 130 years, that would certainly account for the dead sound of the piano. I find it hard to believe that the strings are original, they looked too bright to be 130 years old, and the hammers as shown seemed to bright and without grooving to be original. Maybe the soundboard is original and has lost crown... that would certainly make it sound dead.

Nonetheless, it's an incredible work of art. BTW, I read in the inof on the website that the piano was a rosewood, plain case piano as completed in the Steinway factory. It was delivered to the woodworker's shop for the artcase modifications. It is surprising that they didn't decorate the underside of the fallboard, the underside of the lid, and change the propstick for a more decorative one.

Maybe they didnt do the fallboard because it would be kind of distracting when playing it. smile

As for under the lid, I can kind of see why, it would tend to be very dark under there, especially in 1880s livingroom lighting, it would be hard to see the decorating.

the lid prop is a bit boring looking though! I certainly would get a carved out one.
