Has anyone seen the film The Red Shoes, recently restored technicolor. It is fantastic !

what's the movie about?

I've seen it, it's about a ballerina who wants to dance, dance, dance! And then there's romantic elements, an agent, it becomes quite the drama with her having to make a choice between dancing and not-dancing. Oh THE HUMANITY!

You're in for a treat Angelina! It's about an artist, in this case a ballerina who in the end must die for her art....because she has no choice. It's considered one of the great movies of all time, something I'm in complete agreement with.

It has the famous line "Put on your red shoes and DANCE!"

I could do without the director's cut, though, where in the ending she is taken by aliens to the planet Z to heal the Emporer by dancing for him. I don't know WHAT he was thinking...

I've seen a version on my own home theater - but it must not be this new version you're talking about? Tell us more about it? Is it a Criterion release, or a different company doing it?

I saw it on the big screen (a movie theater in Southern Calif.) back in the late 60s - and the film was 20 years old then !! Thought it was a bummer that the dancer died at the end.......

I don't know what company is distributing the film. I know that Scorcese is in some way involved. What is interesting is that it is not the video but the film itself that has been restored and re-released. In Europe it is can be seen in movie theaters pretty much everywhere.

I saw it a long, long time ago. These last years I've watched it at home on video with my kids. When I learned that it would be playing in a movie theater, I drove 3 hours and 200 kilometers with my daughter to see it. My daughter missed 2 days of school! I didn't want her to miss The Red Shoes on the giant screen, it may be the only opportunity in her life.

It is absolutely fantastic. What a difference, seeing it on film and in a theater, rather than on video.

I wouldn't say that it is about an artist having to make a choice. It is a fantasy really, based on a tale by Hans Christian Anderson. The subject is not the ballerina so much as the Ballets Russes, the Russian Ballet. Naturally, you have to have a prima ballerina who embodies the fantasy, our fantasy, and who dances to her tragic end, with her true love taking off the Red Slippers as she dies, just as happens in the ballet that is at the center of the movie.

In Europe it has had a good circulation. I don't know if, in the US, there is any room in the cinemas for an old film, what with so many new masterworks like Avatar and Shrek 8 and so on.

There are some art houses in the US that will show older films, especially if they are restored and rereleased. I would love to see The Red Shoes on the big screen. A couple of years ago, I finally had the opportunity to see The Wizard of Oz on the big screen after watching it for the past 50+ years on TV. It was amazing!

It is a wonderful film

i would love to see the film.. there is a girl's book (aimed at 10 - 12 yr. olds) .. on that theme and it's named something like 'the red shoes'.. there is some prank where a girl's shoes are dyed red and the legend says that the wearer of the red shoes must die. good little book for a girl.

anyway, I happen to have a pair of red organ shoes you might like to see...

We seem to have a theme here - The Red Shoes, Wizard of OZ (which had Red Shoes - Ruby, really), apple is from Kansas, and has Red Organ Shoes.

My girlfriend really enjoyed the movie when she watched it - and she doesn't care for older movies at all.

I saw it in 1948, a mere child of course, and thought that the train had run over her. I never miss it when it's on tv, and didn't know about a big screen re release.

Many a kid was inspired back tthen by this film and Moira's dancing -- or I should say many a PARENT was inspired.

I also love the outfit she wears when she goes to Walbrook's villa on the Med - it was by Mainbocher, I believe. Huge cape of pleats, shiny material in blue.

Alas, you're too late; Moira Shearer died in 2006. She was a beautiful, red-headed Scottish girl whose movie career - largely because of the success of The Red Shoes - somewhat overshadowed her real ballet career which lasted from 1941-1953.

According to Wikipedia, she continued to act in films after her retirement from ballet.

So, based on this thread - has anyone run out and procured a copy of the movie? I'm curious as to whether last night was "Red Shoe" night for many people.

The movie was on TV just a few weeks ago--TCM I think--and I remember when I was small (brat) I saw it at the Wesco Theater and was bored. As an adult it was interesting but not earth shattering. I believe this showing was the original but I missed the opening blurbs by Robert Osbourne so can't say much. For dance enthusiasts it would be quite important.

I regularly fall in love with beautiful actresses, Moria Shearer included. WHen I was a kid I fell so hard for Lee Remick in Days of Wine and Roses I dreamed of marrying her when I grew up.

Isn't that at least part of why we go to the movies? Currently madly in love with Naomi Watts, Emily Mortimer, and Laura Linney.

Who, who and who? I've never heard of any of the three. I guess I need to get out more - or not.
