Well I was just thinking I should be smart and buy some lock keys for my baldwin and story and clark.

Will any "Piano lock" key work? Can someone point me out to some that would work? I dont know if I could find one for the S&C but I am sure baldwin ones are available.

The nice thing about my rodgers organ was not only was there a key lock for the lid, but since it was a rolling top made out of solid wood, it was too heavy for my brother to lift up. smile

Hi Brandon,

I don’t think the fall board lock key is anything special… it’s like a basic skeleton key. I have one for my grand but not for my studio upright. I would think most any piano store (or hardware store) would carry them and be willing to let you bring it back if it doesn’t work.

Take care,

Rick

Some makes and models can vary slightly. Some will have shorter ends and perhaps the long part of the key could vary just a little. You should call a dealer to help.

I have a drawer full of new keys and they are many different sizes. It was the same back when. You can probably get lucky with another key because the locks aren't sophisticated, but you may have to try many to find the right fit.

Oh...

Well you say "it was the same back when".... well I have a 105 year old american built upright... would that classify as a standard key maybe?

Im sure the baldwin will be a quick find. Ill look around and see what I find. Its more for the baldwin anyways. Not so much the S&C.

That should work I think... That seems to be standard for old uprights.

The grand and newer keys seems to have just a little tung on the end.

Brandon,

That pic is definitely the typical type of key for most (not all, as already mentioned) of those old uprights but there were two shapes. The one in the pic is triangular, probably the more common of the two. The other type was square. Use a flashlight and look inside your lock and you should be able to see which you need.

Brandon,

A square screwdriver S3 works for my 80 yr old Cable grand. Doesn't look very "piano keyish", but works, and it's always available at most hardware stores. I'd like to find one that is proper though.

IT WORKED! I used some scissors and it closed the S&C lock! smile

It is the triangular lock system. I haven't checked the baldwin yet. But my brother messes with the poor old S&C the most.
