Hi everybody! I have been playing the piano for about a year now. I can easily read the notes to any song, so I am not worried about that. My only problem is that I can NEVER do parts of a song that require quick fingers. If you do not know what I mean, here is an example:

http://www.youtube.com/watch?v=uB4SJC-nIRo

The part at 2:37 is what I am talking about. I just used that part as an example, but I struggle with the same exact thing on every song I try to play. I figure it has to do mostly with the speed/strength of your fingers, but I have no idea how to build up the speed/strength. Can anyone give me any exercises that I can practice to be able to play parts like these? I keep trying to practice it over and over, but I always end up failing.

Thank you very much, and I hope I posted this in the right forum.

Lacking that, try Hanon's Virtuoso Piano Exercises for a few months, and then as needed when rusty.
Czerny is also good for helping with runs.

Out of curiosity, have any pianists been busted (like athletes) using drugs to 'help' their playing? I've never really thought about it before, but I suppose it's possible..anything is possible.

First of all... check out these quick fingers:

Richter: Chopin Etude Op. 10 No. 4

Yeah, that just happened. Anyway, there are any number of possibilities for why you are having trouble with this. Maybe you are using too much finger action (lifting your fingers too high) in which case you should try to keep your fingers closer to the keys when you are playing in general, or maybe you need to work on your scales some more. Have you gotten to where you are practicing major scales regularly, if so set your metronome to a manageable speed and increase speed gradually - also incorporate 'galloping horse' (dotted eighth-sixteenth rhythm instead of straight eights/sixteenths) or 'speed burst' (organize the run into 3 or 4-note groups then play the passage where the first note of each group is long and the other 2 or 3 notes in each group are fast) practice techniques into your scale routine.

Do you work on your scales and arpeggio's?

Any tension in your hand due when playing the quick passage will result in some mistake in one form or another.

Here, as opposed to there
You don't need quick fingers to sing a song.

Is that youtube video the OP playing or just used as an example? I was lead to believe it was just to show which passage was giving him a hard time but not actually "him/her" performing.

on a side note, the Yamaha A1 looks like a great instrument for its price.

That, and major 7th arps. My new teacher has me doing those in all keys, and I'm telling you I haven't touched Hanon since.

Major 7th arpeggio, technically speaking, would be the same as the dominant and diminished arpeggio's found in Hanon.

Ugh I remember having to do those for an exam. I loathed it! (the whole scales experience for an exam)

No, I do them as they are — I believe — found in the Brahms exercises.

Land of the never-ending music
Try Czerny's School of Velocity maybe?
But actually I tend to agree with Angelina that the best method is to practice a lot...
