Hey Pianoworld! I just bought a Baldwin Hamilton piano this weekend at a house auction for $55 and I am trying to find out when it was made.

I tried to call up Gibson but I think they were already gone for the day, I guess I will try again tomorrow.

The style no. is 243 HPO and the serial no. is 438405.

If you have any info on it I would love to hear it. It is a beautiful piano with hardly any problems. I know I got a great deal on it, I'm just wondering how good.

Thanks in advance for your help!

That is a very recent piano, newer than the serial numbers I have at hand. You got an excellent deal.

Grand Theft Piano!!! I hope you paid cash or a counter check with no address.

According to bluebookofpianos.com, 1982's first Hamilton was #366819. Extrapolating from that indicates a build date of around 1988-1991. Of course, I could be wrong, again. Searching "used Baldwin Hamilton" shows prices around $1500 - $2200 for newer Hamiltons. Location and condition mean a lot, of course. Older pianos are less, of course.

Congrats on the new Hamilton. It's a great piano. You did good.

Yea no one was bidding on it and I was more than happy to throw $55 on it! It still has shipping plastic strips on the inside of it. I will post tomorrow after I get in contact with Gibson about when it was made.

ChasT is in the ballpark with his 1988-1991 date.
I looked in the Pierce Atlas, then looked up what holidays were likely to be observed in 1991, and narrowed down when the piano was likely built. (I also assumed a Monday through Friday work week, 8am-5pm with a 1 hour break (12pm-1pm) for lunch, and the two weeks with X-mas & New Years being off.) I came up with a rate of 23.61 pianos per day, so I tried to calculate what day that piano would likely have been made... and attempted to narrow it down further.... to....

Friday, July 19, 1991, at 2:25:17.154 PM.

Maybe someone who knows Baldwin pianos better than I do could possibly improve the attempted accuracy of the date I came up with, or correct it entirely? wink Didn't Del work for Baldwin at that time, or do I have my information wrong?

Now... if only I can find that good of a deal on a piano.... my '56 Hamilton was $349 and my '50 Hamilton was $0, but it's not in pristine condition. (It holds tune quite well and sounds pretty good, but the bass, like almost all pre-243 model Hamiltons, is anemic, and the action needs some regulation.)

Congratulations and welcome to the Baldwin Hamilton club. Some other folks here have gotten great deals on these pianos, but none as good as what you pulled off. Post some pictures when you get a chance.

And 88 Keys, yeah, Del did work at Baldwin around that time and I remember reading that he did some tweaking on the BH scale. Not an extensive redesign like he wanted to do, but I'm sure he improved it.

Right on 88Key, I just got off the phone with Gibson and they said that it was made in 1991!

I will get some pictures of it in the morning and post them up. Thanks again for your help.
