After a few months of soul searching I have bitten the bullet and purchased a new M&H CC94 from Faust Harrison in NYC. Made the decision three days ago and it was delivered today!

Thanks to Michael Harrison for patience and restraint while I test drove pianos up and down the east coast, including going to the factory to compare. That feat was facilitated by none other than PW's own Rich Galassini, who deserves an award for graciousness in defeat. Too bad there were no vintage CC's at Keith Kerman's PianoCraft to try, that would have made my decision even more difficult...such great work those folks do. I would recommend any of these three piano houses, class acts all.

That being said, there was just something about this CC that sold me...warmth of tone, clarity and sustain all the way up, ease of touch with keys that "stay with you", make playing it all the more wonderful. It even eclipses my Hamburg B in many ways. And oh, did I mention that incredible Mason bass? Like an organ pedal, just doesn't quit. And it doesn't hurt that it's about half the price of a new S&S D. I'm a very happy man.

Long live Mason and Hamlin!

Congrats!

I know that must be one heck of a piano, because you are such a fine musician.

Congratulations on purchasing a wonderful CC!

It is funny how one piano stands out amongst the others. They do all have their own personalities.

Such a quick delivery too. You must be in music heaven!

indeed; and outfitted with dual crown retention systems.

another reason it's a beast (to movers, anyway):

Steinway D weight: 990 lbs

M&H CC94 weight: 1400 lbs

Dear Hautboys,

It was certainly a pleasure to meet you and to introduce you to such a spectacular instrument as the CC. I am sorry that ours sold, but Michael and Faust Harrison will treat you beautifully. I am sure you already know that.

I was also impressed with your playing and the insight of the comments you made on our new and rebuilt inventory. I vehemently disagree though that I am better looking and more talented than Keith Kerman. wink smile (just kidding Keith)

On a personal note, I enjoyed the time I spent with you and fully intend to croos paths with you again.

All the best,

How many people did it take to move the CC? Three people had quite a time with my BB, although most of the difficulty was because it barely fit in the elevator.

Well, you start the day with a moving crew of 4-5 and you hope 2-3 show up for work the next day grin

I've always been impressed by the fact that my 7 foot M&H BB at 1000 + lbs actually weighs more than a Steinway D. I'd love to watch them move the CC94 !!

Three guys moved my CC2. The instrument blew out the pneumatic tires on their custom dolly, and they did an elegant dance to up-end the piano to get it through my front door.

The head moving guy said something to the effect of, "This is going to cost you."

And it did, but I was prepared.

The day after our movers struggled with the delivery of my BB they went out and bought a "special" dolly to use specifically for Mason and Hamlins !! grin

Sounds like a great piano. Congrats. The M&Hs that I've played on all had really deep, powerful sounds...and they weren't even CC. I can only imagine.

Thanks for the kind words, Keith, Rich and everyone who responded. When I figure out how to upload the photos of moving day, I will.

Particularly interesting was getting it in the front door and around the staircase, with barely two inches to spare. Kudos to Safeway Piano Movers of Kinnelon, NJ...Jeff and his 3 men got "the beast" in fairly quickly, and three of them were back the next day to move my NY S&S B to my NYC studio.

Yes, it growls, but it also purrs. I am amazed that it (usually) doesn't overwhelm the room sonically, but...one has to be careful with such a big bass. There is definitely a tiger in the tank. It's up to the player...it can be played very delicately and has a very sweet treble...OR...!!! In short, an enormous dynamic range. As part of the package, Paul Van Ness (who played an all-Chopin recital last night, BRAVO!) will be doing some additional voicing along with the in-house tuning. But I'm going to play it a good bit before then...sounds so great right now. As you can see by length of time between my posts, it's quite a distraction.
