I am looking for a piano for my daughter and have been doing a lot of research on here to find the perfect fit. I'm pretty sure I want a Yamaha U1 or U3. A local dealer has a few U3M available from 1983-1986 all for around $3500. I remember reading on these forums that there may be a problem with the M series Yamahas. Would these be in that catagory and should I stay away from them? You have all been very helpful, I really appreciat it.

First of all,the U3M is not of 1983-1986. The U3M was more like 1980-1983. The superceding mdl. was the U3A which was of 1983 to 1986. The issue of the U3M was the material of the repetition thread. It seemed to deteriorate prematurely. Yamaha since than in the U3A changed the material grade. The U3H that preceded the U3M was also fine. If one is considering a U3M, have a tech check the rep threads to see if they were addressed. You are aware we are talking gray market Yamahas. wink

Do a search on this forum for "gray market" and "grey market". You will find lots of pros and cons about used Yamahas available in the age and price range.
