I am looking for advice on a first piano purchase. I've found a Kohler & Campbell ~1992 baby grand SKG500. It sounds good, a slight clicking noise in some of the keys, but overall appears to be in very good condition. I can get this for $3700. (it indicates Sherman and Clay on the board inside)I'm somewhat familiar with the history of the selling of these brand names to manufacturers, but not sure what it means in terms of value.

One odd thing is that the visible felt at the back of the keyboard (front view) is black across the keys and red on each end. I'm thinking this indicates some refurbishing has been done, but the seller has not indicated this.

This is a piano my children will be staring lessons on, and I just play for my own enjoyment. I'm really just wondering if $3700 is decent asking price for this model in good condition - being sold by a piano company. They have offered a warranty for as long as I have it, and complete trade in value if I want to upgrade.

The black and the red felt sounds like they changed it for a customer sometime in the past.
I suggest you purchase it, especially because you are getting it from a dealer that will back the product and allow you to trade up.
Sounds like a good deal to me.
I have SKG600 5'9" Polished Ivory on my floor for more, so I don't think you can lose with that deal.
Good Luck.

Thank you for the feedback. I should have added that this is a 5'1, so its smaller, but still I thought it sounded like a good deal too.

The black nameboard felt is original on the SKG500.No idea as for where you are refering to the red felt. You will notice the black understring felt on the plate. Kohler & Campbell is a stencil manufactured by Samick. The main difference is the solid spruce soundboard as compared to the laminate soundboards that Samick is known for in that era. There were sudtle case differences compared to the Samick grands. Interesting....I've never seen a Kohler and Campbell SKG series with a stencil(Sherman Clay) in that Kohler & Campbell is in itself a stencil.$3700 is a fair price with the dealer perks though one could kick in a bit more $ and get a brand new baby grand piano superior to the SKG500. If that is your max as to your your pricepoint,it is a fair retail deal.

Hi PB,

I think Riley is talking about the felt strip on the underside of the fallboard that is visible at the back side of the keys (between the rear top of the keys and bottom of the fallboard) when the fallboard is up. That felt strip is red on my grand. I like the purple colored felt strip on some of the K. Kawai grands.

Take care,

Rickster

Hey Rickster,In the piano industry the felt that runs along the underside of the fallboard which one sees along the back of the keys (black in this case) is called "nameboard felt"when you request it from the piano supply houses. wink

I'm still in Piano 101. Now you take someone like Del Fandrich or even my bellyman David Rubenstein or my main rebuilder Gene Korolev, now you're talking vast knowledge from experience. Many talented knowledgeable persons out there unfortunately there are more hacks than the latter. Fortunately on this forum there is an overflow of talent and knowledge. wink

Yes - it's the "name board" felt that I was referring to. The black felt stops at each end where the keys do. Then the red shows over the very end wood pieces on each side. Sorry, I don't know the proper names for these parts. It's all visible by looking at the front of the piano.

I did buy it. And from what I've read, it seems I have a "which what who" type of piano. Manufactured by Samick, Sherman and clay sound board, Kohler and Campbell branding on the front, decorated with various colors of felt. Which, I might add, I didn't notice in the showroom.

It is beautiful, though, and I'm just a couple years away from my Kawaki "dream piano", with Millenium Action. So in the mean time, my children and I will enjoy this "which what who" and take good care of it.

Of course, next time I will bring a camera with me to the store, and write down the serial number of the actual piano I play and choose to buy.

The red felt on each end is probably attached to the cheek blocks. It keeps wood from touching wood when key cover is open.
