Hi everybody!
I would like to know if there are any piano pieces that are written with more than four independent voices. The thought of playing more than four independent voices is cool as it seems very hard as our fingers are so close together. I'd like to learn some five or six voice piano pieces but I don't know any pianist or composer who has written any six voice piano pieces.
Therefore I'd like you all people to help me with telling me about some pieces that are written with 5 or more independent voices on the piano:)
I think that I heard once that Debussy had written one song which consisted of 10 voices but I'm not sure.
So tell me about piano pieces with 5 or more independent voices:D

Thanks evrbdy!!!

Bach has written 5 voice fugues and a quick internet search came up with 5 voice fugues by Shostakovich. I'm sure there are more.

Best regards,

Deborah

Bach's Musical Offering has a six voice fugue in it. In their only meeting, Frederick the Great had challenged Bach to improvise a fugue on a theme that Frederick gave him. Bach did so on the spot in three voices but then Frederick threw down the challenge of improvising in six voices. Bach demurred but took the theme home, and wrote the Musical Offering and sent it back to Frederick-- in it is a six voice fugue built on the theme that Frederick gave him. Bach had the last word!

The fugal section of the "Quasi-Faust" movement of Alkan's piano sonata ends up with eight, I think. The last of Glazunov's op.101 fugues has five voices.

Dang, beat me to it (the Quasi-Faust part)! But in a way, that's good. smile

Yeah, it's a short section (not even a minute long) but it has many voices in it.

Check out the score on (I think) page 29
Beginning of the video.

Off topic sort of:
Some say the Grande Sonate is one of Alkan's most important achievement, but even as an avid Alkan fan, this piece took me a long time (even after repeated listenings) to get what makes this piece such an accomplishment, and I'm still trying to "understand it" even better.

Joseph Achron's "Symphonic Variations and Sonata" (solo piano, despite the "symphonic" title) has a 6-part fugue (beginning on page 21). It's a handful! (two hands full, in fact)
