Hi people, I want to play with the demo of Pianoteq. I have a good computer but is my typing keyboard enough to try something or do I need a real keyboard to make things work?

Yes, you can play with Pianoteq without a one and it' will make sounds but to do anything useful with it you really need a keyboard/controller.

Alternatively, you could use it to playback MIDI files.

Cheers,

Does your computer have a decent sound system conected to it. That would include either that your computer's internal line-out is very good or a good quality USB audio interface and some "quality" studio monitors". For most people is will be the weak link and the thing that prevents Pianoteq from sounding like a real piano.

Try this experiment: Find a CD with a recording of a solo piano performance. Pick a modern recording that is technically well made. Play it back on your computer. Does it sound as if there is a real piano there with you in the room? If not then Pianoteq hasn't a chance of sounding like one

You could just do come mouse clicks on a virtual keyboard to hear isolated notes. But I don't know if my ear is good enough to evaluate a piano by listening to isolated note. The other option would be to play a MIDI file.

In order to test your setup for live play, you need to play it live with a real MIDI controller. Part of the test will be to see if latency is acceptable and if your computer can handle large Polyphony numbers. Yes you might have a "good computer" but much depends on how it is set up and software drivers and so on.

If you have a pre-recorded midi file (thousands on the net), it can be rendered to wave in Pianoteq, and the soundcard will not be used to create the wave file.

However, when you play the wave file, the soundcard comes into play.

About two months ago my EMU 1820M crashed (bad capacitors), and I had to use the onboard S/C.

It was so bad sounding that I couldn't listen to anything until I had the EMU fixed.

Soundcards can make a huge difference.

Glenn
