Used to be when I clicked on a thread, most(but not all) of the time)I was sent to the first post in the thread I hadn't viewed. Lately, I am always sent to the very beginning of the thread.

How's this supposed to work?

It works most of the time for me like you described it. But occasionaly I find a particular thread that always takes me to the first post even though there are new posts since I last visited.

I don't know why.

No one finds it annoying to have to scroll down to find the first post you haven't viewed in a particular thread?

Or no one except me has except me has to do this?(I have a normal Dell laptop)

I think this is much more annoying than seeing some new ads(which I never noticed).

It's not happening to me, pianoloverus. Mine just pops down to where I left off.

pianoloverus :

It happens to me, too, a Dell laptop user, but it seems random enough that I have never bothering trying to figure out why, sometimes, I am immediately sent to the post after the last post I had read, while, at other times, I am sent to the beginning of the thread.

Similarly, in a multi-page thread, when I click on the number of the last page of the thread, sometimes I am sent to the top of that page, sometimes to the post after the last one I had read on that page.

I just accept this as one of the great mysteries of cyberspace and continue working on my scroll techniques.

Regards,

BruceD

Of which there are many. I consider the way my computer does send me to the first unread post more than a great mystery - it's more like magic! smile

Maybe a Dell laptop does not affect it, but whether you are using Internet Explorer, Safari, Firefox, or another kind of internet browser?

Has it always been as you descirbed above for you? It used to almost always jump to to the first unread post for me. At my age I don't know if can afford all the extra time scrolling to find the first unread post. cry

Of course, if there is any operating factor other than chance in the answer to this question, it's more likely to be the web browser one uses rather than the computer.

Now you're really putting me on the spot! I think that the answer to that question is that I'm too old to remember whether it's always been that way, or whether it's been that way since changing from IE to Firefox as my most frequently-used browser.

Cheers!

For me it's consistent for any given thread, but not between threads. Some threads, even if I click on date in the posts column, always open up to the first page. Others will open to the last comment made. None of them, for me, open to the last comment I haven't read.

Hm.

Not to put too fine a point on it, but not to "the last comment I haven't read" but to the first comment after the last one I have read; or, to the first of the comments that I haven't read.

It almost sounds like a cookie issue.

I'm inclined to agree. PL you may want to check your security settings or you may be doing something crazy like running two different browsers (like I do), but I only read Piano World with Firefox.

I don't think it is on the client side - which rules out cookies. I sometimes view Pianoworld on multiple computers and my phone and it will keep my location for certain threads fine. For other threads, it does not.

This describes my situation. Multiple computers/operating systems plus a phone, and usually all I have to do is log in and the system remembers which posts I've seen before. I've never noticed any pattern to which threads decide not to remember where I left off...it rarely happens for me, but once it does, that thread is like that forever.

I suspect that it's some sort of database issue since this info must be centrally stored...whether it's a UBB bug or just a side-effect of PW's huge volume, who knows.

edit: If a sysadmin was given a few sets of usernames/threads that aren't remembering, I bet that s/he could tell from looking at the database what's going on. But, I really don't know how "open" UBB makes these things.
