hello everyone
my family own a " Rich , Lipp & Sohn " upright piano that i believe was made around the turn of last century.
it has a serial number "23857" inside and stamps from a lot of royal families from different countries.

we have been trying to find out some info about it, (has been handed down through the generations) and dont seem to be able to find anyone that can help.

would like to know how old it is , approx value and anything else that we can find out.

i found this site last night after doing a webb search, and a lot of german sites that i cant read.

thank you
dave

P.S. we are in Australia

Nice job on the "search"!
I can see from the other thread why you'd be interested in Lipp pianos. smile

These instruments are/were very well thought of back in the UK...I only saw a few...
Quite a deep body and tall....very resonant and glorious sound....
Dates from circa 1905 to 1925 seem to ring a bell....
Maybe Chris Venables who posts here and is UK based, might have some more info....

Good luck

That serial number puts it at 1903! Made at Weigenburgerstrasse 32 in Stuttgart.

I have seen one or two in the UK, I vaguely recall one going through a sale room about 5 years ago and being knocked down for about £60-80 to a man who bought about 10 old uprights for next to nothing. It was in good condition externally but was extremely out of tune. I even have a photo of it somewhere I think - I made note of it because I was wondering if there was a link to the Sohn in Steingraeber & Sohn.

You would be very lucky indeed to get anything for it in the UK. It would cost more to transport it as a one-off than the piano is worth. In Australia - I would guess the same.

If it has been handed down through your family then I would imagine the sentimental value outweighs the monetary worth.

Currently playing 2017 C212 with carbon fibre soundboard, WNG action. Working on Bach, Beethoven, Grieg mainly.

AJB,
Sohn [or Sohne] means son.
Interestingly I know of a post war Hamburg 'Steinway and Son[s] Welte' reproducing piano where the 'h' and 'e' were carefully removed from the fallboard and veneered in. This was presumably to hide the German origin, something which happened often with Hupfeld piano rolls I think.

btw,
I seriously doubt the new 'Lipp' pianos have anything in common with the originals except the name. Both of the German klaviermeisterbau with whom I have spent time working identified the original brand as being one of exceptional quality and sound.
There's a nice site on a very early one here about a early one.

Hi there!

The (original) Richard Lipp & Sohn pianos are not at all well known in the USA, it seems, but are viewed with great admiration by tuners/techs and musicians in the UK! They were made with great integrity and had wonderful designs, and many consider their uprights and grands to be the equal of contemporary Steinways, Bechsteins and Bluthners, such is their quality. They are known to be a favourite of restorers and are rather sought after on the second-hand market due to their tone, light but precise action and their relative rarity.

It seems that many Lipps were exported new to Australia and New Zealand - apart from Europe, most of the Lipps that appear on the Web for sale seem to be found there.

I've put several links below to Lipp information on some UK-based sites.

A discussion on a large Lipp upright that I contributed to:-

http://uk-piano.org/piano-forums/viewtopic.php?f=2&t=7478&p=33194&hilit=lipp#p33194

Roberts Pianos, Oxford:-

Courtney Pianos:-

In terms of actual current value, clearly an awful lot depends on how your piano has been treated in the 100+ years since it was made! However in terms of potential value, you should know that, in the UK at least, the two dealers I mention above seem to sell fully restored Lipp uprights for between £3000 and £7500, depending on work done, size and cabinet design (many have fancy inlays, brasswork or Deco detailing).

There's actually a fully restored one currently on Australian eBay for AU$7900, to give you a guide.

Hope that helps!

In the FWIW Department, here's what Pierce's says about Richard Lipp & Sohn: Est. 1831, Weigenburgerstrasse 32, Stuttgart, Germany. Also made Ahlborn Organ. From 1985 to 1992 pianos were made under license by Bentley Piano Co., Ltd. and since 1993 by Whelpdale, Maxwell & Codd, Ltd., London, England. Production stopped in 1998. Whelpdale, Maxwell & Codd, Ltd. entered into receivershp and the company was liquidated in April of 2003.

Serial numbers under the Lipp name started in 1875 with #8000.

James - my ignorance at the time knew no bounds: I thought Sohn was some other family. It was five or six years ago and since then I have lived in Switzerland and acquired a German fiance who has made me learn German....
