I was looking up my Yamaha CLP 240 manual, and noticed that it came with a CD-ROM specifically meant for WINDOWS.

I own a iMac, and how may I connect my iMac to my Clavinova ?

I don't think you need anything to connect but the right Midi to USB cable, if the cl240 does not have USB already on it's panel. It should work with Garage Band as soon as it is "recognized" as the connected midi device. The disc is probably "bundled" software--editing, recording, etc.--which you may or may not want. See if your Mac will open what's on the disc.

Plug it in and see, chances are it will just work, I haven't had to install any midi drivers on either of my Macs so far.

If you find you do need drivers they can be downloaded here

Much thanks, Bob and Baz.

The CLP 240 does have a USB to host port.

Now if I want to use software instrument, how do I shut down the existing timbre on my Clavinova ? The manual doesn't say a thing, unfortunately.

Set the 'Local Control' MIDI setting to 'OFF'.

Cheers,

Thanks, James.

Are you referring to some switches in the Keyboard or in the Garage Band of Mac ?

As others have said, you don't need a driver. Just plug it in.

In the world of USB devices there are several "classes". Some are. "mass storage device", MIDI device", and "audio device". If the hardware follows a certain set of requirements is is called "class compliant". Modern OSes can handle all class compliant USB devices without drivers because all of these device operate alike

However some USB devices have functions that goes pas the standard, you'd need a driver to access those functions.

Just plug in the Piano and you should be able to record and edit MIDI in Garage Band. GB is also an excellent host for playing plug-ins like Pianoteq or Ivory if you don't like GB's built-in piano samples

I don't think you need to turn off the local control. The piano will send MIDI data to your computer (via the USB-to-host port) regardless of the local-control setting. (If you don't want to hear the sound produced by the piano, you could just turn down the volume control.)

From the user manual:
Local control can be turned OFF so that the keyboard does not play the internal voices, but the MIDI information is still transmitted via the MIDI OUT terminal when notes are played on the keyboard. At the same time, the internal tone generator responds to MIDI information received via the MIDI IN terminal.
