Hi, I'm usually an admirer of the baroque periode, but lately I'm starting to really like the atonal piano music as I'm slowly discovering it (2nd vienne school, sorabji, bartok etc).

Is there some pieces that a beginner like me could play ? (I can play bach 2 voices inventions)

Thanks!

I don't have an answer to your question, but I just thought I'd let you know that this is the 10000th topic on the adult beginner forums. Congratulations! laugh

You might take a look at a couple of pieces in Robert Starer's Sketches in Color, Set 1. These are very short pedagogical pieces introducing the student to various 20th-century techniques. Grey, for instance, is built on a 12-tone serial row. Black and White is bitonal with a pentatonic scale in one hand playing against a diatonic scale in the other. Others are tonal but use sudden modulations or shifting rhythms to create a "modern" effect. Perhaps these aren't as "atonal" as you want, but they are easy and interesting.

Webern wrote a Kinderstuck (Children's Piece).

Much of Schoenberg's piano music is not terribly difficult technically.

Bartok wrote a lot of easy piano music, although it is not really atonal. There is a lot of 20th century music with different tonalities for beginners, although not atonal.

thanks fellas I listened to what I could on youtube, I dont really like the Robert Starer's pieces (matter of taste I suppose) but the webern's ones are great. Unfortunately I couldn't find any free score for the kinderstuck so I think I just need to buy it

I'll look forward for schoenberg and bartok .
