I found a three year old Yamaha G2 being sold from a private seller for $8,000. Haven't played it yet, but it sounds like it was well cared for. I've just begun my search for a new piano (currently playing on a 1937 Brewster) and I'm not sure if I should spend the money on a G2 because I would prefer a C3...on the other hand I'm a poor college student and it will probably be a long time before I can afford something of that quality (went to a "blowout sale" and the C3 still cost $28,000 new). First, does the G2 price sound right, and second, should I purchase the G2 and "step up" to the C3 at some point in the future?

In my opinion the main advantage of "stepping up" to a C3 is the length of the piano. The G series is an artist performance series piano. However, I think the G series was discontinued much longer than 3 years ago. Find out the manufacturing date you the G2 as I think it will be older than you think.

As mentioned above, I think the G series grands ended production somewhere in the mid-1990's. You may want to run that serial number past the Yamaha website.

Hmm...I searched the yamaha website, but could not find a place to imput the serial number for the age. I did find a page that listed the years certain serial numbers were made and where at:

but I could not match the serial number I was given (2850143) with these. If anyone could find a link, it would be greatly appreciated.

According to the link, it looks like it was built in early 1979 between January and June.

The seller was kinda stretching the truth abit, don't you think ? "I think we bought the piano about 3 years ago though I might be mistaken, maybe it was 30 years ago" grin

Maybe the seller bought it grey market 'as new' 3 years ago. Some buyers are gullible. I'd stay away from a 30 year old yamaha to be honest. So many much nicer pianos available at better prices.

OF course, I'd have a new Yamaha any day, they're totally different from the old ones.

Haha yeah, I think I'll let this "deal" pass. I'll give the seller the benefit of the doubt and say that I don't think they were lying, because she knew absolutely nothing about the piano. When I first called her asking about it, her first description was "shiny".

And I just checked Yamaha's site...the thing's grey market!!!

Thanks for the help, everyone.
