I was greatly saddened by the news that Earl Wild died last Saturday at his home in Palm Springs. He is survived by his long time partner and manager/producer, Michael Davis.

Because of his association with Shigeru Kawai in his later years I had the pleasure of preparing pianos for Earl's recitals on a few occasions. I not only found working with him extremely enjoyable, but was truly honored to hear him perform with amazing virtuosity at such an advanced age. I was shocked and hugeley flattered when Michael called my boss at Kawai and asked for me specifically to prepare the piano for one of his later concerts. Unfortunately I wasn't available to do so, but I think you can imagine that I wanted very badly to cancel my other commitments to fulfill Earl's request.

If I may tell a short story:
I had spent a morning preparing a Shigeru VII loan piano at his home in Palm Springs, and afterwards Earl came in and started to play. This was a few months after his heart surgery, and he was just beginning to play again to prepare for his last series of recitals. It was amazing to me to hear that the piano sounded different when he played - when I plinked at it it sounded like a nice Shigeru Kawai, but when Earl played just moments later the piano sounded like Earl Wild, not a Shigeru Kawai, making the tone. Maybe this sounds like I'm trying to be mystical, but the piano's tone was became Earls tone, and his Chopin literally brought tears to my eyes.

I guess I'm getting more sentimental as I get older, but I will always remember my association with Mr. Wild very fondly, and am now very sorry that I did not make more time to visit him and Michael and work on his pianos.

Earl Wild was a consummate artist whose playing could melt a heart of stone. A timely and touching story on the passing of a great pianist. Thank you Don.

Robert.

Thank you, Don.

I was also greatly saddened by your news.

Earl was one of those precious few pianists who could create a wide and varied tonal palate from the piano and fill the room with it an a way that recordings don't capture.

I, too, worked with Earl many years ago. He was a joy to work with and listen too. His sound projected and appeared to grow every time I walked away from the stage into the auditorium. Truly magical.

No, Don, You are not trying to be mystical. It is, indeed, a mystery how he created so many sounds, both to us mere mortals and possibly to Earl himself. When I asked him how he did this, He did not appear to know, It was just the way he knew how to play.

He will be missed.

I grew up listening to his Liszt and his operatic paraphrases. A few months ago I listened to those paraphrases five or six times while working in my workshop. I too revered him and am saddened by his passing. We have lost another great from that generation.

Thanks for sharing your story Don.

Very sad new... I had a privilege of seeing his performance before.
What a loss of great living legend.
Rest in peace, Mr. Wild.
