Well I did slow it down for myself , I’m limiting my practice time to about 5 min every day now for a strain in the right wrist.
You're right too Monica- I was “wildly” optimistic .That could be good, but maybe for something less intense.

Cheers!!!

I can see your new avatar, pianonewbie. Mysterious.

Croatian rhapsody progress report, week 1: Thought several times over the weekend "I really need to dig out my old sheet music for CR and try to play through it."

I was one of the "slower students" in the first study group. I eventually finished and memorized the Croatian Rhapsody and it is now one of the 6 pieces I have in my memorized repertoire. I manage to run through the CR at least once every couple of weeks. Now that I have it completed I've given myself permission to shorten my own performance by eliminating some repetition. I'm thinking I can probably get this piece down to approximately 3 pages instead of 5 (i think the version i used is 5 pages?).

Great to see some familiar faces again (ShiroKuro, Monica & Mel). Mel you might be interested in knowing that one of the pieces in my memorized repertoire was introduced by you (the Brazilian Samba?...how embarassing that I can't even remember the actual name of the piece). Shiro, long time no talk! I haven't been around lately but will lurk every once in a while. Monica, it simply baffles me that you find the CR to be such a personal challenge because you inspire me so much with your own piano accomplishments! Agilia, good luck this time around! And good luck to everyone else who picks this up. I'll be lurking.

Thank you, Jeff! But I think this is a case where self-teaching really isn't optimal, because I play what I like and don't stretch myself to play other genres. So I have little trouble picking up dreamy, slow new age piano pieces but have major gaps in my technique for, oh, complex rhythms, blistering tempos, and handling key changes smoothly. grin

So far the advantages to self-teaching for me outweigh the disadvantages, hence the gaps and subsequent Croatian Rhapsody trepidation.

Hi Opus45!!

Here's my progress report. During the winter break I worked on all the sections of CR and was at the point where I was going to start working on polishing and putting it together. Then I didn't play it for a few weeks. Now I am startinG at the back and working fowards. Am currently focused on last page right now. (Pianonewbie, I'll meet you in the middle!)

School's back in session so my Internet time is limited to when I'm on the bus (like now! I hope no one minds if my typing skills aren't up to their usual standards!) but I'll try to follow this thread. I'm hoping to record CR (but not for Feb!) so I am not going to let this piece slip out of my fingers this time.

Started piano June 1999.

Hello All,

quote:
Shiro

“Now I am startinG at the back and working fowards. Am currently focused on last page right now. (Pianonewbie, I'll meet you in the middle!)

I am going slower than I originally thought. Along the way I made the persona of this piece as being “way big”, and thought, well maybe this is beyond my skill level .
quote Opus 45
“I manage to run through the CR at least once every couple of weeks. Now that I have it completed I've given myself permission to shorten my own performance by eliminating some repetition. I'm thinking I can probably get this piece down to approximately 3 pages instead of 5 (i think the version i used is 5 pages?).”

I’m glad I read Opus’ post because he disippated the “big” persona of the score and I feel less intimated by the length and difficulty.

Not mysterious,,, inteeeeressssssting.

Here’s the actual page from the book I have been practicing from.. [Linked Image]
