Hello, I'm new to the forum. I have spent the last two months looking for a grand piano and have narrowed my choices to two: a Kawaii KG-3 (1982) (5 year warrantly) and a Kawaii KG-2 (1989)(10 year warranty). I've had a reputable tech look at both of them. They are both in very good shape, they both sound great, and are in the same price range. My tech said he wasn't too concerned about the warranty difference as, in his experience, warranties rarely come in to play. I generally understand that I should get the largest piano I can afford, but that said, it seems to me the trade off is in age. I'm leaning towards the KG-3, but want to make sure I'm not missing anything. I'm an amateur who plays regularly as does my young son (who is a beginner). Any thoughts would be welcome. Thank you

I have a 1973 Kawai KG-3C and a 1992 Kawai KG-2E. Both were acquired just this past year. I measured the bass strings on both and found that the lowest string on the KG-2 was one inch longer than the lowest string on the KG-3 (because it's an older design?), though the soundboard on the KG-3 was a little longer. If I liked the sound and action of both and had to make a choice between the two, I would go with the newer piano - or maybe toss a coin? smile

Your at an advantage because you can make your own opinions of each piano. Which one do you prefer?

...If you dont have a definative preference then I would purchase the newer one, unless the older pianos finish is in better condition. Your probably not going to go wrong either way.

The newer KG2E is my choice having had many preowned specimens of each. Newer, better sounding hammers, upgraded action design. Newer the better!
Interesting about the speaking lenght of the #1 bass string in that the KG3 is suppose to be longer as in 6' vrs. 5'10" of the KG2.Learn someting new everyday! I'll have to measure that bass string on my KG2C and E that I presently have. wink
