I am currently shopping the internet for a good and affordable String Cover for my 1917 Baldwin L. I'd never thought about using a String Cover before but because my house is so dusty I'd like to try it for a while to see how much difference it makes. I cannot understand why my house is so dusty, we do not have a Forced Air heating system. My house uses a hot water Boiler with Radiators for heat, very dry. This is the dustiest house I've ever lived in. I ordered a Piano Cover yesterday and now I want to get a String Cover. Can anyone who uses a String Cover tell me what a difference it actually makes? All the Makers I've found say that the piano can be played with the Cover on and it only needs to be removed for Tuning or to shake it outdoors once a year. Any input will be appreciated.

I would be very interested in knowing how such a cover would alter the sound of the instrument....

I have an Edwards String Cover, excellent product...it's the best one out there... a bit more expensive, but worth it.

It does dull the overtones somewhat when left on during play, but it's not bad. It certainly helps with the dust, and with household air pollution, such as when frying and cooking. These over time can be bad for the bass strings. It also helps with moisture.

Does your piano sound muted with the cover or quieter or is it more or less the same? When the lid is closed, the piano has a very different tone than with lid open. Does the cover make the piano sound like it has the lid closed?

The string cover does mute the piano more when the lid is closed as opposed to leaving the lid up with string cover on.

I does sound quieter with the cover on, no question....the overtones are definitely muted somewhat.
