In my Library of Piano Classics, Vol.2 (Amsco), the fingering for the first measure of the Rondo is 1 2 4, then 3 in the second measure. This is not a typo, as it is repeated later. I find it awkward though... I also have a pdf file, and in the pdf file the fingering is as I would like it to be, that is to say 1 2 3, then 4....
What could the reason for the fingering in the Amsco edition be?

What could the reason for the fingering in the Amsco edition be?
To put a stronger finger on the E flat.

My Dover edition is 123 in measure 1 and 4 in 2nd measure. Not specified in my Henle edition. In reply to Pianoloverus, too much of an accent on the Eb sounds awful! Definitely prefer 1234!

I think the huge majority of people would use 4 on the E flat. But using the other fingering doesn't mean one has to accent the E flat. Do you think every time you use your third finger there is an accent?

I think the fingering AFTER the E flat is why they chose 1,2,4,3, which would be 4,2 for the F,D and then 3,1 for the E flat, C. Personally, I don't care for it, especially since you'd end with 1 on the final C of that phrase, thus making it easier to create an unwanted accent there. Fingerings are a completely personal thing. Quite often, I'll fill a score with fingering for practically every single note after trying out as many possibilities as I can. By the way, the Tovey, has 1,2,3 with 4 on the E flat.

CA The fingering you dislike like isn't unique to the specific edition you're using. It's consistent with the staccato articulation of the upbeat eighth notes in relation to the musical phrase that begins on the Eâ™ of measure 1. Steven

That would make sense, but they used 5,2 for the F,D... Maybe 3-5 (Eb-F) is easier than 4-5 somehow, although personally I don't have a problem with 4-5...

I do 1 2 3 3. A 4 on E-flat just doesn't work for me. 1 2 3 3 is what's in the edition I have (Stewart Gordon)and it is most comfortable for me.

But with the fingering I described above just the weight of your hand combined with the impetus of the phrases direction make it too easy to place an unwanted accent at the end of that phrase. Pointless question really.
