I really like the features of the Yamaha YDP223. I think it would last my 8 yr old for a long time. What do you think?

I think that the YDP223 would be a fine piano for a beginning student. I don't have one, but I test played one when searching for my own and was quite surprised with the feel and sound of it. It has the GHE which I thought was a very nice touch. It only has a one layer sample, but I'll bet it is the same as the P-85 that Snazzy really likes. It seemed solid and was easy to adjust settings. It has just enough features like record, metronome and a few voices to get a student set up for learning and creativity! I think a console style is a good idea for younger kids because they don't have to worry about the pedal(s) sliding all over the place and, let's face it, kids get wiggly and a little crazy at times. Anyhow, that's my take on it. Good luck on your purchase!

I tried several console dps, including the Kawai CN42 (excellent, but a bit expensive) the Yamaha YDP 140, 160 and 223, the Casio AP200 and AP400, and to my ears (with the possible exception of the Kawai) the YDP 223 was the best.
I now have it at home and couldn't be happier. The sound is excellent, and the action is superb, which is very important for a child just starting to learn piano.

I have to agree with you, Gerardo, the YDP-223 is a great little piano, and definitely an ideal instrument for a beginner, and even a more experienced player.

i would prefer YDP160 instead. 223 has been around for several years, while 160 is a fairly new model.
