Is it possible to make a Kawai RX7 sound like (clost to) a Steinway B? Thanks. Ansley

No. The piano is a fixed tone instrument; therefore a Kawai will sound like a Kawai. A Steinway will sound like a Steinway. Of course, you can voice each instrument for tones that you want to hide and other tones that you want to bring out, but you cannot make one instrument of one brand sound like another brand.
Best to buy the tone you are looking for........

Mine too.

My opinion? I like the RX 7 quite a bit...but like the others here, I'll say opine that it will never sound like a Steinway.

I do understand your quandry...you'd like a B, but maybe the cash isn't quite there. I personally think the Kawai is a good choice. What you don't get is the depth, nuance, or dynamic range of a Steinway. What the Kawai has is a big, rich, mellow, sweet tone. I find them quite appealing in many ways, and they are a joy to work on. But a Steinway it will never be, for better or worse.

Thanks to everyone for the info. I realize that "sound" is very subjective and personal. I also am very aware that there are probably as many bad sounding Steinways as there are really good ones. However, a really good Steinway , to my ear, is very distinctive and hard to beat. I hope to have the money to buy one someday. Ansley

However, a Kawai RX7 is a longer piano than a Steinway B at approximately a third of the cost.

While I find a good Steinway a superlative piano, I think that we can also celebrate the diversity of piano makes available today which have a distinctive voice. A Kawai will not sound like a Yamaha, nor will a Bluthner speak like a Brodmann.

Each piano voice will appeal differently to individual tastes and budgets. Music to some ears may be the substantial savings made in the purchase of a more affordable piano.

Buying a beautiful Steinway will not make us a better pianist and could push towards bankruptcy. Was it Richter who said that he preferred the challenge of making music on a Yamaha? On a Steinway it was too easy!

Happy Christmas!

Robert.

"Is it possible to make a Kawai RX7 sound like (clost to) a Steinway B?

It's like asking if it's possible to make Julia Child sound like Lady Bird Johnson. I mean it, you know, in a good way. You have to have a Meryl Streep if you want one instrument to sound like both Julia and Lady Bird. And even then I'm not sure.

So the answer is, no.

RX7 has a wonderful and exciting sound of its own--- those long strings--- and an excellent touch and action. The Shigeru might give you the additional refinement of tone you're looking for, with a less-inflated price tag.
