Let me preface this by saying that I know nothing about pianos other that what I've read on this site over the last few days. I live in Jacksonville, FL. I'm looking for an upright piano for my wife (who hasn't really played since she left home at age 18) and my 5 year old daughter who may want to begin lessons. After shopping around for a while, my price point has crept up to $3000 or less. I've been considering grey market Yamahas or a used Baldwin Hamilton if I can find one.

I found this Yamaha that I haven't seen in person yet. The owner doesn't know much but I did get a serial number - 1191367. It looks like a console to me. If I read the chart correctly, then this would be manufactured in 1971. Am I wrong? Is this a good piano for the money if it checks out with a tech? For my price range, should I keep looking for a studio? Here's the link.

What else would you recommend for under 3K?

A little long in the tooth if your expectation is to have several years with it.

Just over $3k you can get a new Cable Nelson (Yamaha) CN116.
In the $3k range there are several new Indonesian or Chinese built 45" and 48" uprights new with warranties. Samick products under several names, Young Chang, Hailun and others.

The piano is a model M1A console, 42" tall, not 48" tall as the add states.

The M1A was a solid little piano that should serve you well.

Strikes against it would be the age and height. More recent pianos are taller and have a deeper bass. It's a balance of the price and what you want.

i was kind of in the same boat not that long ago so i understand your problem.

but i have come to learn that pianos are a bit like cars. you would want to buy a 40-year-old classic car but not so much a japanese-made one. this is especially true with uprights. i consider a new cable-nelson if i were you.

that said, if the piano isn't too far from you, i think playing it and looking inside it would tell you a lot more information than the internet would. i tried the craigslist thing, and saw this beautiful baldwin that was like-new, but had not been played, basically, ever since it was manufactured in the 50s. so everything *looked* really good until you tried to play it and practically it was like a piano with arthritis (so sad....:( ). it was only for $300 but of course i didn't buy it.

so...shop around... physically. smile good luck!
