Guys and Dolls

Does anybody remember this movie classic with Marlon Brando, Jean Simmons, Frank Sinatra and Vivian Blaine? ... by chance I picked up a bargain-basement DVD to remind me of early days playing the Frank Loesser score ... and am presently working my way through the lot ... so far Luck Be A Lady is under fingers, as is A Woman in Love ... still to go

If I were a Bell
I’ll Know
Guys and Dolls
Sit Down You’re Rockin’ the Boat

Just thought someone out there might like to be reminded of the "good times" (did they really have all those crap-playin’, gamblin’ crooks in NY?) ... and have included a montage shot of the movie and the first page of Guys and Dolls ... to spark interest.

Watch out for Sky Masterson, Nathan Detroit, Sarah Brown, Adelaide, Nicely-Nicely Johnson, Benny Southstreet, Rusty Charlie, Harry the Horse, Angie the Ox, etc. ... not to mention Sgt. Branagan trying to bring order to the streets of NY.

Keep in mind that the movie is not quite the same as the musical.

One would think that The Oldest Established Permanent Floating Crap Game in New York would be his longest title, but he also wrote The New Ashmolean Marching Society and Students' Conservatory Band.

Some things never change

When you see a guy ... reach for stars in the sky ...
You can bet that he’s doing it for some doll;
When you spot a John waiting out in the rain ...
Chances are he’s insane as only a John can be for a Jane.

When you meet a gent ... paying all kinds of rent ...
For a flat that could flatten the Taj Mahal ...
Call it sad, call it funny, but it’s better than even money
That the guy’s only doing it for some doll.

On the other hand

When you see a dame ... change the shape of her frame
You can bet she’s reducing it for some guy;
When you find a Doll with her diamond in hock ...
Rest assured the rock has gone to stock some gentleman Jock.

When you see a mouse ... hurry out of the house ...
And she runs twenty blocks for cigars and rye ...
Call it dumb, call it clever, ah, but you can give the odds forever
That the doll’s only doing it for some guy.

Complete the rhyme landorrano ... I've copied the words straight out of my Guys and Dolls songbook (which could only squeeze in 2 lines of verse)... but thanks for more input.

Love "Guys and Dolls" and it's music!

Have you noticed that Dolls are no longer Dolls, but are now included under the title of Guys...how often have you said recently something like "Are you guys..." when referring to a couple or mixed group?

Are Dolls just another victim of Political Correctness?

What do you "guys" say?

JF

smile Yes, but not just in Chocolatetown....

I suspect that future revivals of "Guys and Dolls" will be called "Guys and Guys"...with at least 4 possible combinations of guys...maybe more, depending on whether or not the term "guy" extends to gay-doll-guys (so to speak)...

Does anybody remember when "Fugue for Tinhorns" was the basis for a familiar television advertisement for Gold Medal Flour?

"Can do, can do ... with Gold Medal you can do."

Imagine an era when enough people still baked from scratch that flour would even be advertised in a TV commercial! Must have been decades ago. Dang.
