Hello Everyone,
This is my third post about my first time piano shopping.
You have all been so helpful to narrow down my search for a piano.

Here is my final choice of my search for a used piano.

Schimmel C120 made in 1992. Seller bought new in 1993. Daughter played on it, moved out and has been sitting for awhile in the house (very clean home).

The piano is immaculate! In and out. So I placed a safety deposit with the seller.

Next step to hire a technician...
The problem is when I called the closest certified technician to the seller, I kinda got a weird vibe from the call. He seemed very helpful then he asked me how much I was going to buy the piano for and where it was etc. I told him the lady wants 4k for it. Then he told me not to pursue it but to go to Big Ed's to look for a Yamaha there...

He said the Schimmels are not good pianos and he is not very fond of them. He said Yamahas will last me a longer time and it will be a better buy. So I went to the site above, and looked at the Yamahas...they were basically the same price as what the Schimmel is going for and they were older! So...do I just pass off the inspection and have my concert pianist friend take a look at it and buy it?

Oh, read my last post if you want to catch up on things.

Thanks for all your advice!

Could this tech have some connection to Big Ed's? perhaps he does a lot of work for him and has a vested interest in Ed's business.

I'm not too familiar with Schimmel, but I would be suspect of any tech that refers to a Schimmel as "not a good piano". I'd look for another tech, and a second opinion.

It sure seems to me that you found a tech that you want to run away from. Hardly an unbiased opinion.

Have your friend play it and keep searching for another tech. You might be surprised how large some of their service areas are.

Have you checked for a tech at the Piano Technicians Guild? Their website has a search feature for technicians.

I have a 1992 Schimmel 120 which I bought 8 years ago. I can only say that it has been a fantastic piano and my tech loves it. I would not be surprised if the tech you called were to put you off in order to get it for himself. Wonderful instrument and IMO head and shoulders above Yamaha.

I just bought a used Schimmel C124 and I love it. I bought it after playing many used Yamahas and Kawais in various pianostores and I heard the same lore as you did. Dont let that throw you off mancheechee. You put money down on an excellent piano. Most importantly: Do you like the way it sounds and feels? If yes, find an unbiased tech and get it looked through. (BTW for what its worth, the Schimmel brand is rated in a "higher" class in Larry Fine's book than Yamaha, Kawai - no disrespect to any owners/dealers of said brands...)

Schimmel's are rated a whole step higher than Yamaha's in Larry's book. I'd be suspicious of a kick back that tech is getting.
