Hi Everyone,
Any thoughts on how fast the 18th prelude in WTC I should be played? I'm taking it very slow (larghetto-ish) and quiet (p-mp) but it seems like it could also faster and louder. I have no problem with ambiguity here and, as I'm using the Henle urtext, that's kind of built into the experience. But I'd appreciate some opinions. And I know they're out there.

I've heard it played both slow/soft and brisk/louder. The g# minor prelude is one of those wondrously amphibious Bach miracles that can go either way. (In contrast, it seems to me the fugue does not have that kind of flexibility, so it's not something to be taken for granted.)

Play it both ways!

"... 'amphibious'(?) Bach miracle" ?

According to the glossary in the Alfred edition of the WTC I, editions give MM indications ranging from 92 to 132 (eighth-note) and recorded performances ranging between 88 and 160 (eighth-note).

Regards,

"amphibious", usually meaning pertaining to land or water, but more figuratively (from Merriam-Webster) "combining two characteristics."

From the Greek amphibios, literally: living a double life (amphi, as in "amphitheater" in which you are surrounded on both sides; bios, as in life).

"The amphibious double agent didn't know where his loyalties lay."
"The amphibious Bach prelude didn't know if it was fast or slow."

I thought you were perhaps referring to a land-based performance of Handel's "Water Music!" That would be amphibious, wouldn't it?

Cheers!
