Hello, I just came back from my piano lesson and there are a few things I couldn't discuss with my teacher because we ran out of time. Normally I wouldn't ask for advice on the internet, but my teacher is going on vacation and I won't see him for a while, so I would apreciate it if someone could help me out.
My teacher wants me to learn how to improvise and compose. I would love to be able to make my own music, but I don't like the idea that I should just think up a melody and then stick some standard chords behind it... it just doesn't feel right. The only music you can make this way sounds so stale and.. tonal... I understand I have to begin with the basics, but isn't there a way to make things a little more free and interesting?
My teacher also mentioned that I use a little too much rubato...
I always try not to play too much rubato, but I can't help it. my teahcer thinks my little problem may stem from my inability to read time signatures and note values correctley. Somtimes I don't distinguish between normal notes and triplets, so I just make up my own rhythm and I never really read time signatures. How could I train those skills I need to keep the rhythm flowing in a good and natural way?
