Hi Everyone, Is Selected Sonatas Volume One, edited by Dale Tucker, Belwin Edition, a good intro. for Scarlatti or is there better teaching material.

Thanks,

John

For Scarlatti, I prefer the Ralph Kirkpatrick edition (Schirmer) in two volumes. His preface contains a mountain of wisdom. And he doesn't clog the pages with editorial fingerings or articulation or dynamic markings. He trusts the intelligence of the teacher.

I also like the Maurice Hinson edition (Alfred) in two volumes. His preface is more visual oriented, and his explanations are more specific to each selected sonata. I just don't care for some of the sonatas he chose to include. This is more of a "performance" edition, and the editorial suggestions actually make sense, and are quite helpful.

Agree with AZN...and it's about the only time I tell someone to use Schirmer =)

Thanks AZN and Jennifer for your replies. I ordered the Schirmer version.

For teachers themselves I see no substitute for getting all of them, then deciding which ones are suitable for students.

Question to all: why did my suggestion that getting a complete set of all the Scarlatti sonatas totally shut down discussion in this topic?????????

Probably nothing sinister, Gary smile . I only just noticed this topic a minute ago, and can't think how I didn't see it before.

I have the Schirmer, but it's always frustrated me because it seems that almost every time I come across a Scarlatti sonata I want to play it just isn't in that selection.
