Interesting article

IT begins.

To the untrained eye, they seem no more than random scratches cut into the wood - a beautiful, but meaningless, addition by a talented artist to his masterpiece.
But the mysterious markings circling this Renaissance figure, which has spent nearly five centuries peering down from the King's Bedroom at Stirling Castle, are more than that.
In fact, they offer a fascinating glimpse into our little-known musical past. The markings take the form of straight incisions alternating with circles, which look like ones and noughts.
