We purchased a used Krakauer Bros. piano that has written above the
keyboard "Madison, New York" as possibly the model. The serial#
inside is 53662. This appears to be a very solid quality piano from
what we can tell but we can't tell how old it is. The person who sold
it to us refinished the paint. The black keys on the piano keyboard
appear to be real ebony wood.

Does anyone know the year this piano was made and how good the model is
relative to other's in that era ? I think the size is 5'0" but i'd need
to check.

This piano wouldn't be from the Lake Carmel, NY vicinity by any chance?

Playing piano at age 2, it was thought that I was some sort of idiot-savant. As it turns out, I'm just an idiot.

It was made in 1926. The Madison was one of the cheaper lines that they built, however, it is much better than the Madisons made when the Lester Piano Co started making it for Krakauer in the mid 1930's.

Fingers, the person that sold us this piano is a guy from the Pine Bush NY area and he told us that his roommate has this piano and used to play and he took it and refinished it. Might it be yours ?

Curry, some of the keys seem to be unlevel with the other keys. Is this easy for someone to fix/correct with a tune up ? I can't see how someone could get down where those keys are attached to the wood and do anything with them.

Uneven keys may be an indication that the felts underneath the keys have been eaten away. It might also just be that the hammers are resting on the hammer rail, which is easy to fix. A proper job of leveling keys can be very time-consuming.

These are the sorts of things that you hire a tech to tell you about before you buy the piano.

Curry, this is a baby grand 5' 0".

BDB, thanks for your comments.

The person that sold us this piano is the person that tuned our other piano. He's a graduate from the Juliet School of Music and is a professional pianist and tunes pianos. I'm just shocked that it's a 1929 model as he told us that the thought it was about 30 years old.

cjpiano,

The piano is not mine. About 2 weeks ago a friend(non player) asked me about a Krakauer baby grand that was offerd to him. It was in this house in Lake Carmel that he was looking to spec on.

I've never heard of Krakauer and suddenly it pops up twice in the last 2 weeks. A coincidence - no doubt.

Best of luck to you,
fingers

You might want to be sure that the person you hire to work on your piano has had experience with, say, leveling keys and other sorts of regulation issues that would need attention with a 70-year old piano. Not every tuner is also a technician.
